On December 14th, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast of the Republican Party won a landslide victory in the second round of the Chilean presidential election.
According to the quick vote count by the Chilean Election Authority, Kast won 58% of the vote, far ahead of his opponent Jeannette Jara, who received 41%.
Mr. Kast, 59, a hardline conservative lawyer, has pledged to crack down on crime, tighten immigration controls, and deport hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants.
