The Apple Intelligence ecosystem is expected to explode as developers get their first access to the iPhone maker's AI models.

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 on June 9, Apple will officially open Apple Intelligence models to third parties.

This is considered an important move by Apple after implementing AI features such as Genmoji, Image Playground and text summarization tools. Previously, the iPhone maker did not allow outside developers to access its platform models.

According to Gurman, the new software development kit (SDK) and accompanying features will allow third-party apps to integrate and build directly on the same large language model that Apple uses for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

But instead of accessing powerful AI models running in Apple’s own cloud, developers will be given access to a stripped-down version that runs on the device, which offers faster response times and privacy, but also limits processing power.

“This is a clear effort by Apple to boost its AI ecosystem after a rocky start. Some features like notification summaries have been criticized for being unrealistic, while Genmoji has not met expectations despite being heavily promoted,” said Mark Gurman.

The move also makes strategic financial sense. The App Store is currently under pressure from regulators around the world. A US judge recently ordered Apple to allow developers to redirect users away from the App Store to complete payments, threatening the company’s traditional revenue sharing practices.

In that context, stimulating a new wave of AI applications that integrate directly with Apple Intelligence will help offset the losses. Apple still makes money from in-app business models, so a rich AI ecosystem will strengthen the company’s position in the software space.

Gurman believes that Apple is hoping for a second “App Store effect” if it makes it easy for developers to tap into AI. The iPhone maker will then create a series of new exclusive experiences, thereby increasing the appeal of Apple’s operating system and device ecosystem.

Announcing AI access at WWDC 2025 is seen as a necessary step for Apple to catch up with the AI race. Competitors such as Google, OpenAI or Anthropic have spent many months successfully deploying platform models and developing global AI communities.
