Apple recently shared updated data on iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 usage rates, revealing the number of iPhones and iPads currently running on the latest operating system versions.
These statistics are compiled based on the number of devices that made transactions on the App Store on February 12th. This is how the iPhone manufacturer typically measures the popularity of a software update within its ecosystem.
Specifically, Apple stated that 74% of iPhones released in the last four years are running iOS 26. If we consider all active iPhones, this figure rises to 66%.
In the tablet market, 66% of iPads introduced in the last four years have updated to iPadOS 26, compared to 57% of all iPads.
Apple also provided comparative data with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, previously released based on the number of devices that made App Store purchases on January 21st. At that time, 76% of iPhones from the last four years were running iOS 18, while the percentage across all iPhones reached 68%. With iPadOS 18, 63% of new iPads had updated to iPadOS 18, and the overall percentage of iPads running this version was 53%.
Looking at the statistics alone, there isn't much difference in popularity between iOS 26 and iOS 18. However, Apple released iOS 26 statistics later than usual. Statistics for this version were recorded approximately 150 days after the update was widely released, while iOS 18 was measured only about 127 days later. This means iOS 26 has been available for about 3 weeks longer.

Despite the longer update period and similar update rates, iOS 26 appears to be significantly slower than iOS 18. However, the decrease is not as substantial as some unofficial predictions suggested.
Apple hasn't specified the reason for the slowdown in the iOS 26 update, but some users say the temporary delay is due to unfamiliarity with the new Liquid Glass design.
Conversely, iPadOS 26 has a slightly higher adoption rate than iPadOS 18. However, some tech experts note that the newer version was also released about three weeks earlier.
