At WWDC 2025, Apple officially confirmed that the new version of Siri, deeply integrated with Apple Intelligence, will not be released this year. Instead, the feature may be released in 2026.
Although Apple spent most of the event showcasing upgrades to Apple Intelligence and iOS 26, the Siri virtual assistant was only briefly mentioned. Many wondered about the actual state of Siri after Apple promised a major upgrade last year.
In an interview with Tom's Guide shortly after the speech, two senior Apple executives, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, and Greg Joswiak, Vice President of Global Marketing, explained the delay in detail.
Siri has not met expectations.
Federighi stated that Apple had developed two versions of the Siri architecture: a V1 version introduced last year and a V2 version with enhanced features. Although the first version of Siri was technically ready, the company decided not to release it because it did not meet user expectations.
"We realized that if we tried to release version V1, it wouldn't meet Apple's standards or customer expectations," Federighi said.
Subsequently, Apple shifted all its resources to developing the V2 architecture, a more unified and robust version capable of handling complex contexts and performing actions more intelligently.

“The V2 architecture isn’t a complete remake; it’s an expansion and refinement of V1. It’s the foundation for a much smarter, more personalized, and more reliable Siri experience,” Federighi added.
Currently, Apple has been internally testing the V2 architecture but it hasn't reached a stable enough level for widespread release. Therefore, instead of committing to a specific launch date, the company has chosen to remain silent until it's ready to deliver the product to consumers.
At WWDC 2024, the iPhone manufacturer confidently showcased Siri with a new interface, capable of remembering conversations and performing many complex tasks. However, according to Federighi, version V1 still has many limitations after months of testing and is not yet ready for market release.
Apple needs more time.
Apple asserts that its goal is not to build a chatbot. Instead, the company wants to build an AI platform to assist users in all their daily tasks. From writing emails, summarizing notifications, translating text, creating images, to suggesting intelligent actions based on content, Apple Intelligence is designed to be integrated deep within the operating system.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal , Federighi offered what he considered "the most honest answer ever given by Apple." He argued that when the internet first developed, no one questioned why Apple didn't have a search engine or an e-commerce site like Apple's.
"The internet is vast, offering opportunities for countless companies and allowing users to do so many things on it. It's also a great opportunity for Apple. Apple has created more applications for the internet than any other company. But that doesn't mean every internet experience has to take place inside Apple," Apple's software chief stated frankly.
One key factor contributing to Apple's slower rollout of AI chatbots compared to competitors stems from its commitment to privacy. The entire Apple Intelligence system is designed with a data processing model that runs directly on the device, combined with a private cloud computing service to keep user information absolutely secure.

"We want to deliver a powerful AI experience without sacrificing privacy. This will take a lot of time," Federighi shared.
The delay in launching the new Siri shows that Apple isn't rushing to chase the AI wave as a mere technology race. Instead, the company is building a long-term, secure, and user-friendly platform.
Apple has not yet announced a specific release date for the new version of Siri. iOS 26, with its initial Apple Intelligence features, will launch this fall, while a full version of Siri will need at least another year to be truly perfected.
