The advantages of using massage and acupressure as a therapeutic method include its simplicity, ease of learning and application, and generally good therapeutic effects, especially in functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system. In the treatment of obesity, massage and acupressure are applied relatively widely, particularly for reducing fat in specific areas (abdomen, hips, thighs, etc.). For whole-body weight loss, it is usually combined with other treatment methods.

Acupressure massage techniques are often used in weight loss treatments:

Rubbing: This is the most basic and commonly used technique. Using the pad of the thumb, the pad of the little finger, or the base of the hand, rub the patient's skin in the area to be treated in an up-and-down or left-and-right motion. The duration is 5-10 minutes, with gentle movements – warming the massaged area and improving blood circulation in the meridians.

Rubbing: Using the base of your hand or the little finger, gently rub in a circular motion on the area to be massaged – this is often done on the abdomen and back, gently and softly for 5-10 minutes. This is a common technique used in abdominal fat reduction.

Separation and Conjunction: Using the thumb, or the tips of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fingers, or the little finger, place them close together and pull evenly to both sides (separation). If the pull comes inwards from both sides, it is conjunction. In separation, the patient's skin is stretched in two directions; in conjunction, the two directions converge to one point. This action is often combined with rubbing, massaging, and pinching movements to treat obesity. The duration is 5-10 minutes.

Pinching: Using the tip of your thumb and index finger, or your thumb and the other four fingers, pull the patient's skin up repeatedly, keeping the skin constantly curled between your fingers. Pinching in the abdominal area helps reduce fat. Duration: 3-5 minutes.

Vibration: Using the palm of the hand, place it on the patient's skin in the area to be treated. The therapist's palm should not leave the patient's skin. The therapist uses vibration force from their wrist to create a deep vibration into the affected area – repeat 10-15 times.

Acupressure: Using the tip of the thumb or index finger – either the right or left hand can be used – apply pressure to the acupoint or specific location on the body. The pressure should be moderate and within the patient's tolerance, maintaining the pressure at the acupoint for 20-30 seconds.

Weight loss through massage and acupressure:

Acupressure massage for reducing belly fat:

The patient lies on their back, with their waistband loosened and their entire body relaxed. The therapist stands beside the patient and uses various techniques such as rubbing, massaging, separating, combining, pinching, vibrating, and acupressure – sequentially performing these actions on the patient's abdomen. Before the procedure, a warm, damp towel can be used to gently wipe the area to be massaged. Based on the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer in the abdomen, the patient's physical condition, and age, the therapist determines the appropriate pressure for the massage and acupressure. Each massage session lasts approximately 20 minutes, and can be done twice a day. Commonly used acupressure points include: Zhongguan, Xiaguan, Tianzhu, Qihai, Guanyuan, Shuidao, and Zusanli.

After the massage, if the patient feels a mild, pleasant sensation of pain in the massaged area, then the amount of massage given is sufficient.

Abdominal massage and acupressure not only help reduce belly fat but also promote bowel movements, prevent and treat constipation, strengthen abdominal muscles, boost metabolism, and prevent the accumulation of abdominal fat.

Acupressure massage for reducing fat in the hip and thigh area:

The patient lies prone or on their side, with the lower back loosened and the entire body relaxed. The therapist stands beside the patient and uses massage techniques such as rubbing, pinching, vibrating, and acupressure, applying pressure to the patient's buttocks and thighs. The massage force should be at the patient's tolerance level, lasting approximately 15-20 minutes each time. This can be done twice a day. Commonly used acupoints include: Huanqiao, Beiguan, Fengshi, Weizhong, Zusanli, and Shangjuxu.

Self-massage and acupressure for weight loss:

Approximately 1-2 hours after eating, the patient can choose to lie on their back or sit in a chair, loosen their lower back, relax their entire body, and use a warm towel to wipe and rub the entire abdominal area. Place the palms of your hands on the navel and then use a rubbing and massaging technique from the navel outwards in a clockwise direction, then counterclockwise. Then, use both hands to move from top to bottom and then from bottom to top for 15 minutes. The patient can adjust the pressure according to their physical condition and the thickness of their subcutaneous fat layer, but generally, the pressure should be gradually increased each day. The patient should do this 1-2 times a day.

Points to note when using massage and acupressure for weight loss:

The procedure should be done about 2-3 hours after eating.

This method should not be used by pregnant women, women during menstruation, or people with skin conditions.

For elderly people, the procedure should be performed gently.

If patients experience fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, anxiety, acne, or localized bleeding after undergoing this procedure, it indicates that the procedure was too forceful, and the force should be reduced in subsequent sessions.
