The conference aimed to update knowledge, enhance capacity, and apply new technologies in the comprehensive treatment of cleft lip and palate. It included 23 presentations and 6 practical programs covering areas of comprehensive treatment for cleft lip and palate and craniofacial deformities, such as: reconstructive surgery, orthodontics, digital applications, speech therapy, nutrition, and care.
Notably, within the framework of the conference, the Central Dental and Maxillofacial Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City also put into operation its upgraded and renovated Cleft Lip and Palate Treatment Center, equipped with modern machinery.
Previously, on November 6-7, international experts also exchanged information, consulted, diagnosed, and planned treatment for complex patients, and transferred advanced, new techniques in the comprehensive treatment of cleft lip and palate and craniofacial deformities to doctors at the Central Dental and Maxillofacial Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.
Advances in treatment
Cleft lip and palate deformities are quite common in Asian countries. According to statistics in Vietnam, one in every 500 babies is born with this deformity. Treatment in the past mainly focused on surgical closure of the cleft lip and palate in humanitarian surgical campaigns.
According to Dr. Le Trung Chanh (Director of the Central Dental and Maxillofacial Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City), in 2018, with the support of the University of British Columbia and BC Children's Hospital (Canada), the Central Dental and Maxillofacial Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City inaugurated the first comprehensive cleft lip and palate treatment center in Vietnam.

This center provides comprehensive and continuous treatment for children with the aforementioned birth defects, from infancy to adulthood. Each year, international experts visit to update their knowledge and techniques, applying digital technology to the comprehensive treatment of cleft lip and palate and other congenital craniofacial deformities.
In the five years since its establishment, the center has provided consultation and treatment to over 26,000 patients with the collaboration of various specialties such as prenatal counseling, nutrition, speech therapy, general dentistry, and orthodontics. With the support and sponsorship of humanitarian organizations, most patients receive free or partially subsidized treatment.
Currently, the center has established close contact with specialized obstetrics and pediatrics hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces and cities. Simultaneously, it is transferring comprehensive cleft lip and palate treatment techniques to lower-level units, enabling children to receive treatment, care, and regular monitoring locally, reducing the need for referrals to higher-level facilities.
