| Officials and employees from various units and businesses cycled for the environment and to promote Hue as a tourist destination. |
The new movement is only in its initial stages.
One day on Tam Giang Lagoon, a group of nearly 30 tourists on the "Plastic Waste Reduction Cuisine - Green Chuon Lagoon" tour, organized by Hue College of Tourism and travel agencies, had a wonderful experience. Instead of using single-use plastic bottles, guests were encouraged to bring their own water bottles, which could be refilled at designated points. One of the things many tourists appreciated was the experience of shopping for lagoon seafood and preparing meals without using plastic bags. From this trip, the organizers, businesses, and tourists alike spread a green message: Working together to reduce plastic waste.
To date, Hue City has four plastic-reduction tourism destinations: Thuy Xuan tourism, Thanh Toan tiled bridge community tourism in Thanh Thuy ward; community tourism in Ngu My Thanh - Con Toc, Dan Dien commune; and Chuon lagoon tourism in My Thuong ward. Local people involved in tourism have committed to changing their habits and switching to environmentally friendly materials and supplies.
Besides efforts to reduce plastic waste, the tourism industry and related organizations are also organizing many activities to promote awareness, create habits, and call for the cooperation of tourism businesses, locals, and tourists in jointly protecting the environment. One of the easily noticeable and highly appreciated features is the electric bicycle service. This is considered one of the innovative steps in developing green tourism in Hue. These bicycles operate smoothly, are environmentally friendly, do not cause noise, reduce emissions, and are suitable for the ancient, peaceful landscape of Hue.
According to Ms. Tran Thi Hoai Tram, Director of the Department of Tourism, compared to the previous period, Hue is gradually asserting its pioneering role in the trend of green tourism and plastic-free tourism. Gradually, more and more businesses, establishments, and people working in tourism are committing to reducing plastic, developing green tourism products, and aiming to protect the environment.
According to tourism experts, the achievements mentioned above represent a welcome step forward for Hue tourism. However, this is only the initial step. Defining the brand's position means understanding the perceptions of potential markets regarding "Hue as a destination" and ensuring that Hue holds a positive position in the eyes of tourists compared to other places. This also involves defining what "Hue as a destination" truly is, highlighting Hue's strengths, and highlighting its unique qualities that set it apart from other destinations. For Hue to emerge as a vibrant example of green, responsible, and high-quality tourism, a sustained and long-term journey is needed, requiring the involvement and collaboration of everyone.
Community of Responsibility
Hue's current advantage in tourism lies in its almost unspoiled natural landscape, with lush greenery covering everything. This reflects the responsible role of the local government and generations of Hue residents in nurturing and protecting the green natural environment. In many other places, "rapid growth" and the aggressive intervention of industrialization and modernization have led to the destruction of natural landscapes.
Although Hue has already established itself as a green tourism destination, ensuring its long-term sustainability requires more than just slogans and campaigns; it demands concerted efforts and responsibility from many parties. This requires the government, various sectors, businesses, and the community to participate in planning and implementing tourism development strategies.
According to Ms. Tran Thi Hoai Tram, the tourism industry, along with various departments and units, is organizing numerous activities to raise awareness and spread messages about environmental protection and the preservation of cultural heritage values; aiming for a "Green - Clean - Bright" Hue. Recently, the Department of Tourism collaborated with other units to organize a cycling event for the environment with the theme "Ao Dai Through the Streets" in 2025.
The tourism sector will also continue to develop more routes and tours associated with green tourism, especially in heritage areas; open training courses and encourage travel agencies and tour guides to implement the Code of Conduct for Reducing Plastic (implemented by the Hue - Plastic-Free City in Central Vietnam Project in collaboration with the Hue Imperial Citadel Conservation Center and the Department of Tourism). At the same time, it will apply digital technology achievements to the management and development of green tourism. The Department also requests tourism businesses in the area to expand their networks, cooperate closely with each other, and develop professional, environmentally friendly tourism products.
