Driving dozens of kilometers to find E5 gasoline.
At around 9 PM on June 4th, Ms. Phuong, residing on An Duong Vuong Street (An Lac Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), finished her meeting with a friend at a cafe on Ham Nghi Street (Saigon Ward). At that time, the fuel gauge on her 2003 motorbike was almost at the red line.
Recalling the advice of many people that older cars should use E5 RON 92 gasoline instead of E10, she decided to take advantage of the opportunity to find a gas station that still sold this type of fuel on her way home.

Starting from Ton Duc Thang Street (Saigon Ward), she drove along several major roads towards Vo Van Kiet Boulevard (Cho Lon Ward). However, after passing five consecutive gas stations, all she received was the same answer: "Only E10 gasoline is available."
“At that time, the fuel gauge had already crossed the red line. I was really confused because I couldn't find anywhere selling E5 gasoline. Finally, I had to drive all the way to Ly Thai To Street (Vuon Lai Ward), about 4km further, to find a gas station that still sold this type of fuel,” Ms. Phuong recounted.
According to Ms. Phuong, it is currently very difficult to find E5 gasoline around An Duong Vuong Street and many central streets such as Dien Bien Phu, Truong Dinh, and Hong Bang....

Sharing the same predicament, Mr. Minh Hanh, who lives on Binh Phu Street (Binh Phu Ward), said that every time he refuels with E5 gasoline, he has to drive to the area near the Western Bus Station. This adds about 6km to his journey each way.
"The round trip is over 12km just to refuel. The route I take to work is along Nguyen Van Linh road (Tan Hung ward), and there are almost no gas stations selling E5 fuel, so I have to take a detour every day," Mr. Hanh said.
E5 gasoline is gradually becoming "extinct".
From June 1st, E10 gasoline will be widely available nationwide as part of the biofuel transition roadmap. Meanwhile, according to Circular 50/2025, E5 RON 92 gasoline will continue to be produced and supplied until December 31st, 2030.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade , for many older cars and motorcycles, or engines using gasoline that has not been confirmed compatible with E10, people should prioritize using E5 RON 92 gasoline. Therefore, the demand for E5 remains quite high.

However, according to observations by Tien Phong reporters, most gas stations in Ho Chi Minh City have switched to selling E10 gasoline. Many stations now only sell E10 and diesel fuel. E5 gasoline, if available, is only available at one pump.
Mr. Van Son (43 years old, residing in Hung Long commune) said that his family's old car is still using RON 95 gasoline. In recent days, he has been continuously searching for places selling E5 to be prepared when he needs to change fuel. "I've been to many gas stations in Ho Chi Minh City but still haven't found a place selling E5 near my house. I've been searching for days and still haven't found one," Mr. Son said.
According to a survey by Tien Phong newspaper, on Nguyen Dinh Chieu street (Ban Co ward), there is a PVOIL store that still maintains two E5 fuel pumps. Meanwhile, the Comeco system stated that its stores still supply E5 gasoline, but the number of pumps is arranged according to the scale of each sales point.

Conversely, staff at some STS stores said that only E10 gasoline is currently available. Many private gas stations in residential areas also lack E5 gasoline.
To assist people in finding fuel sales locations, the Department of Domestic Market Management and Development (Ministry of Industry and Trade) recently launched the "Around Me" application. The application allows users to search for gas station locations, get directions, track operating status, and view the types of fuel available.
However, according to Ms. Ha Vy (a resident of Trung My Tay ward), the data on the application is sometimes not updated in a timely manner. “Some stores show that they sell E5 gasoline, but when I get there, they don't have it. Other locations are too far away, tens of kilometers from where I live,” Ms. Vy said.
We need clear information.
At a recent forum on biofuels, Mr. Cao Van Phong, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Automobile and Power Equipment Association, proposed that in the future, there needs to be coordination between automobile and motorcycle manufacturers, fuel businesses, technical service facilities, universities, and professional organizations to gradually build a database on the biofuel compatibility of vehicle models currently in circulation in Vietnam.

According to Mr. Phong, what people need now is clear information such as which vehicles can use E10 normally, which vehicles should be monitored further, and which vehicles need to be checked before switching… With transparent data and practical guidance, people will feel more secure.
Mr. Phong stated that the transition to biofuels is a trend aligned with the goals of reducing emissions and promoting sustainable development. However, it is crucial to help people adapt properly to this type of fuel to avoid confusion, complacency, and extremism. Understanding the vehicle they are using correctly is key to a safe and effective transition.
