To build their current squad, Manchester United had to spend almost one and a half times more than Arsenal, Liverpool, and Real Madrid.
According to figures released by the CIES Football Observatory on September 13th, Manchester United has spent $1.235 billion to build its current squad. Of that amount, nearly $500 million has been spent since manager Erik Ten Hag took over the club in June 2022.
The Dutch manager signed Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, and Tyrell Malacia in his first summer at Old Trafford, at a total cost of over $150 million. He also bought Antony for $106 million, making the Brazilian winger the third most expensive player in Man Utd history, after Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku. This summer, Man Utd also invested $90 million in Ramos Hojlund, $75 million in Mason Mount, and $60 million in Andre Onana. CIES figures include add-ons.

Chelsea ranks second with a $1.217 billion squad. They spent most of this money under Todd Boehly, who replaced Roman Abramovich in May 2022. Last month, Chelsea spent $144 million on Moises Caicedo, breaking the $131 million record they set in January with the Enzo Fernandez deal.
Man City ranks third with a squad worth $1.119 billion. Nearly a quarter of this amount was spent on four players in the 2023 summer transfer window: Josko Gvardiol, Matheus Nunes, Jeremy Doku, and Mateo Kovacic. Compared to Man Utd and Chelsea, Man City has achieved a better return on investment. Last season, the Etihad Stadium team won their third consecutive Premier League title, while also achieving their treble goal.
PSG is the only non-Premier League team to make the Top 5. The French club ranks fourth with a squad worth $1.073 billion. PSG also spends the most on attacking players, with $600 million on forwards. Meanwhile, Liverpool invests the most in goalkeepers, with $79 million. Manchester United and Real Madrid spend the most on defenders and midfielders, with $412 million and $481 million respectively.
In terms of total investment, Arsenal ranked fifth with $897 million, just above Tottenham's $890 million. Liverpool ranked seventh with $825 million, while Real Madrid ranked eighth with $759 million. The Spanish club and PSG were the only two non-Premier League clubs to make it into the Top 10. The remaining two positions in the Top 10 belonged to Newcastle with $708 million and West Ham with $542 million.
Serie A contributed 15 teams to the Top 100, while La Liga contributed 12. Ligue 1 and Bundesliga each had 11 teams. Juventus was the biggest spender in Serie A, with $508 million, just ahead of Napoli with $421 million. AC Milan and Inter followed with $356 million and $275 million respectively. Meanwhile, in La Liga, Atletico Madrid ranked second after Real Madrid with a squad worth $415 million. Barca came in third with $402 million.
The Saudi Pro League is the non-European league with the most players in the Top 100, with four. Al Hilal ranks 18th with a total investment of $411 million. This summer, they signed Neymar from PSG, Malcom from Zenit, Aleksandar Mitrovic from Fulham, and Ruben Neves from Wolves.
