Coach Kim Sang - Sik 's Strategy
The Vietnamese national team took full advantage of the match against Ulsan Citizen (November 27) to test their personnel. In each half, coach Kim Sang-sik used a different lineup to assess the effectiveness of each position and test the adaptability of each player. Positive results emerged, with both of coach Kim's lineups performing well, helping the Vietnamese team win 2-0 overall.
Coach Kim Sang-sik's habit of conducting extensive trials (in all positions) began with friendly matches against Russia, Thailand, and India in September and October. On one hand, the South Korean coach wants to give maximum opportunities so that even the most inexperienced players get at least two games to prove their abilities. On the other hand, not many names have truly impressed enough to be included in the starting lineup. According to a member of the Vietnamese national team, this creates a fair and exciting competitive atmosphere where every player has a chance to show their talent, from veterans and young players to those selected from the V-League.
However, with the AFF Cup 2024 fast approaching, Coach Kim needs to quickly finalize the core squad so that the Vietnamese national team has a "backbone." This will allow the team to outline its playing style with specific attacking, defensive, and transitional strategies.
The match against a strong opponent like Daegu FC at 12 noon today is an opportunity for coach Kim Sang-sik to test the strength of his "first team," that is, the official starting lineup. Founded in 2002, Daegu FC has played 19 seasons in K-League 1 (the highest division of Korean football). Their best achievements include third place in K-League 1 (2021) and winning the Korean FA Cup (2018). The team, led by coach Park Chung-hyeon, has participated in the AFC Champions League three times, with their furthest progress in 2022 reaching the round of 16.
What's special about Daegu FC is that they are currently in the K-League 1 relegation play-offs. Coach Park Chung-hyeon's team will face Ansan in two matches, home and away, on November 28th and December 1st respectively. This means Daegu FC may not field their strongest team against the Vietnamese national team. However, since they are in a period of intense competition, any "test" is an opportunity for the Korean representative to refine their tactics for the play-off match. With an opponent clearly motivated, the Vietnamese national team will face an extreme challenge.
" GROUP 1" DEPARTURES
The names expected to be in Kim's starting lineup are likely to start. These include goalkeeper Van Lam, defenders Viet Anh, Thanh Chung, Thanh Binh, midfielders Hoang Duc, Thanh Long, Quang Hai, wingers Van Khang and Van Thanh, and forwards Tuan Hai and Tien Linh.
In theory, this is the ideal lineup that coach Kim Sang-sik has at his disposal, combining experience, strength, and explosiveness across all three lines. However, coach Kim Sang-sik will also incorporate new players, especially in the second half, to further assess each player. Facing a physically strong opponent accustomed to the cold climate of South Korea like Daegu FC, the Vietnamese team will face a fierce battle of endurance. This team also has a muscular playing style, favoring quick attacks and wing play, thus presenting a difficult defensive challenge for Kim Sang-sik's players. The Vietnamese team has conceded 8 goals in their last 5 friendly matches. To stand firm, the defenders must be even more competitive and tenacious in their tackling.
Gradually reduce training volume.
Facing a tough opponent is a golden opportunity for Tien Linh and his teammates to push their limits. The Vietnamese national team needs to break free from inertia to improve their fighting spirit and tactical discipline if they want to go far in the 2024 AFF Cup. In the most recent training session, coach Kim Sang-sik continued to combine physical training and tactical drills to help his players warm up their muscles. The Vietnamese team will gradually reduce the training volume to reach peak form when entering the AFF Cup.
