Amidst the escalating global semiconductor race, Moore Threads, a Shanghai-listed chip manufacturer, has taken a bold step.
Specifically, the company officially introduced two new chip lines, including Huashan (for AI) and c (for graphics), with the ambition to dethrone the high-end product lines from the giant Nvidia.
The highlight of the launch event was the Huashan AI chip, with Zhang Jianzhong, the founder of Moore Threads, making shocking claims about the chip's performance.
The 59-year-old chairman and CEO asserted that Huashan's performance surpassed Nvidia's Hopper line (including the H100 and H200 chips) in terms of computing power, memory bandwidth, and capacity.
"We can now confirm that if you've ever used Hopper chips, switching to Moore Threads' new product for large language models will yield better results," said the founder of Moore Threads.
Besides the AI segment, Moore Threads is also focusing on the graphics market with its Lushan chips. This is expected to be a "bargain" for gamers who love high-graphics games in China.
According to the Chinese manufacturer, the Lushan chip delivers up to 15 times higher gaming performance for AAA blockbuster titles.
According to SCMP , both the Huashan and Huagang chip lines are built on Huagang – Moore Threads' latest generation graphics processing unit (GPU) architecture, delivering 10% better performance than the previous generation.
Moore Threads is making a big splash among gamers in China thanks to the release of several high-performance GPUs. The company is based in Beijing and was founded in 2020 by Zhang Jianzhong, a former Nvidia executive.
Moore Threads Technology was unexpectedly added to the US trade restrictions list at the end of 2023. Recently, the company has emerged as a major competitor in the GPU market, which is currently dominated by Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).
After Moore Threads expanded the number of games supporting the MTT S80 GPU to 130, many gamers in China compared this component to Nvidia's hardware. Some confidently stated that it could rival GeForce. However, the RTX 3060 still shows a significant difference in real-world performance.
"It's on par with Nvidia products like the GTX 3060 in normal situations, but there's still a gap when playing AAA games," said Eliot Yang Bingshi, a gamer in Sichuan, China.
