The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said that at 8:54 p.m. local time (7:54 p.m. Vietnam time) on April 4, an offshore earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 shook the eastern part of the country. There have been no reports of casualties or damage caused by the earthquake.
The quake struck about 120 kilometers southeast of Gigmoto town in Catanduanes province, with an epicenter at a depth of 9 kilometers, according to the institute. PHIVOLCS predicted that the quake would have aftershocks and cause damage. The tremors were also felt in many areas on Samar island and the Bicol region of Luzon island.
The Philippines lies on the " Pacific Ring of Fire" and is subject to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
