FIFA canceled numerous hotel reservations. |
According to the Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association, FIFA canceled approximately 2,000 room reservations in Philadelphia, despite having previously booked up to 10,000 rooms for the event. Notably, the cancellations occurred at four hotels located in the downtown area, surprising the hospitality industry.
The association's president, Ed Grose, shared that while the move was regrettable, it did not create a crisis. "These rooms will quickly be put back on the market and sold to fans who want to come to Philadelphia to watch the tournament," he told local media.
The situation isn't unique to the US; Mexico City, one of the potential hosts for the 2026 World Cup, is also experiencing a similar crisis. According to local hotel industry representatives, approximately 800 out of the 2,000 rooms previously booked by FIFA have been cancelled.
Alberto Albarran Leyva, Director of the Mexico City Hotel Association, said that FIFA initially booked a large number of rooms to avoid shortages and ensure smooth operations. However, after a review, the organization found that it no longer needed all the booked rooms, so it made adjustments.
However, FIFA's failure to announce a specific reason has raised many questions, especially as preparations for the world's biggest football event are entering their final stages.
