The Van Uc 2 bridge construction site is bustling.
Despite the hot weather in June, construction on the Van Uc bridge, part of the Ninh Binh - Hai Phong Expressway (CT.08) project, covering the section through Hai Phong city and 9 km in Hung Yen province (formerly Thai Binh province), is proceeding very urgently.
The Van Uc Bridge project commenced on May 14, 2026. This is one of 14 key projects that will be started and inaugurated to celebrate major holidays in April and May, and the Red Phoenix Flower Festival - Hai Phong 2026.

More than a month after the groundbreaking ceremony, on the Kien Hai commune side, three pile foundation construction lines and towering cranes are operating continuously. Trucks carrying supplies and materials are constantly moving in and out of the construction site.
On the Hung Thang commune side, modern machinery and two pile drilling lines are being used urgently for construction. Along the riverbanks of Kien Hai and Hung Thang, the construction unit is installing temporary spans and bridge approaches to prepare for the construction of the two main piers, T23 and T24, in the middle of the Van Uc bridge, scheduled for early July.
Engineer Nguyen Van Dung, Deputy Director of the Joint Venture Management Board comprising Thang Long Corporation - JSC, Thang Long Bridge 3 JSC, and Bac Trung Nam Infrastructure Construction JSC, said that immediately after the groundbreaking ceremony, the joint venture quickly deployed site clearing, mobilized machinery, equipment, and personnel to begin construction. Regarding manpower, the contractors have initially mobilized more than 150 engineers and workers to directly work on the construction site.
The construction of the two main piers of the bridge, spanning over 2 km across a wide river, in just over a month after commencement is considered a miracle in bridge construction. With its prestressed reinforced concrete structure, a complex design requiring absolute precision from the foundation stage, the engineering team closely supervised the dimensions and placement of the steel cages. Given the investor's high demands on the schedule, the contractor was prepared to work in three shifts, braving the sun, rain, and strong winds.
Land acquisition issues

The upcoming period marks the peak of the rainy and stormy season, which is expected to affect some construction activities and the transportation of materials and equipment. Meanwhile, the land within the Van Uc 2 bridge project area has not yet been handed over, impacting the progress of construction at the bridge piers.
Mr. Mai Quang Dien, a technical officer of Thang Long Corporation - JSC in charge of the bored pile construction project, said that the contractor has only received 50% of the land area for the abutments and piers of the Van Uc 2 bridge on the Kien Hai commune side. Without sufficient land, the bored pile construction lines are operating inefficiently. The lack of land makes the stockpiling of materials, machinery, and equipment very difficult, especially as the rainy season approaches.

The reason why the Van Uc 2 bridge project was able to accelerate quickly after the groundbreaking ceremony is because the contractor took over a portion of the land that had been cleared since the start of the Van Uc 1 bridge project.
According to the Hai Phong Transport Construction Investment Project Management Board - the project's investor - to ensure the availability of land for the construction of the Van Uc 2 bridge, the unit has requested the People's Committees of Kien Hai and Hung Thang communes to expedite the review of land ownership and the application of compensation rates for land clearance with the utmost urgency. As a key project, the city has proactively allocated project capital from the beginning of 2026 to ensure cash flow for the project, from paying compensation for land clearance to providing advances to contractors for the procurement of materials and equipment.
The Van Uc 2 Bridge is considered a crucial "piece" on the Ninh Binh - Hai Phong expressway (CT.08), contributing to the completion of the strategic transportation axis in the Red River Delta region, strengthening inter-regional connectivity, shortening transportation time, and improving infrastructure utilization capacity; creating momentum to promote socio -economic development, attract investment, and expand urban and industrial spaces.
Upon completion and commissioning, the bridge will gradually complete the Ninh Binh - Hai Phong expressway (CT.08) according to the plan, creating a transportation axis connecting the provinces and cities of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, and Thanh Hoa, contributing to reducing congestion on existing national highways and creating favorable conditions for the development of coastal economic zones, industrial parks, services, and tourism.
Upon completion, the Van Uc 2 bridge, with a length of over 2 km and a cross-section of 22.75 m, will be a landmark architectural feature at the mouth of the Van Uc River. At the same time, it will open a gateway connecting provinces and cities in the North, as well as increasing the attractiveness for investors to the Southern Economic Zone, the Free Trade Zone, and the seaport of Hai Phong city.
The Van Uc 2 Bridge Construction Project involves building a new prestressed reinforced concrete bridge over the Van Uc River, with a width of 22.75 m and a length of 2,217 m, alongside the existing bridge. The project is being implemented in Kien Hai and Hung Thang communes.
The project has a total investment of VND 2,068.7 billion. Of this, VND 1,000 billion comes from the central government budget and VND 1,068 billion from the city budget. The project is scheduled for implementation from 2026 to 2028.
