South Africa had a disastrous opening match at the 2026 World Cup : not only did they lose 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico, but two players, Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane, were also sent off.

Zwane even received a harsh penalty, a three-match ban, after the FIFA Disciplinary Committee concluded it was a serious offense following his act of swinging his arm to strike his opponent in the face.

In the second match, South Africa drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic, thanks to a successful penalty by Teboho Mokoena. But there was more bad news regarding the team's squad.
