Unlike hand-painted or calligraphically decorated coconuts, 24K gold-plated coconuts are considered a high-end segment, requiring highly skilled craftsmen with a modern aesthetic sense.
According to the craftsman, the most difficult part is not the gold leafing itself, but rather the selection of the coconut. The coconut must be perfectly round, sufficiently mature, with an intact stem, no dripping sap, and a sturdy shell that can last for a long time. After washing, the coconut is coated with glue, dried, and then gold leafed.
On average, each coconut requires 30-40 sheets of 24K gold leaf, all handcrafted. The gold used is industrially produced 24K gold with a high degree of thinness. Highly skilled artisans may use fewer sheets of gold leaf while still ensuring an even and smooth coating. After being gilded, the coconut is decorated appropriately for the Lunar New Year.
Currently, on the market, gold-plated coconuts range in price from 300,000 to 800,000 VND per pair. Custom-made models can cost up to 1.2 to 1.5 million VND per pair.
