Having been involved in farming and beekeeping for nearly 20 years, Thuy's family has an abundant supply of natural honey. Previously, the honey was only sold retail to casual customers, and its value was not high. In 2017, Thuy registered her business. Thanks to her perseverance, the number of customers who have access to her family's honey products has increased.
In 2021, Ms. Thuy established Thanh Phu Production, Trading and Service Limited Company. “Although the business model has expanded, to penetrate the market more deeply, I have improved all aspects, from product quality and packaging to, most importantly, building a reputable brand to gain customer trust. I researched and developed the U Minh Thuong Melaleuca honey product to become a 3-star OCOP product by 2024; at the same time, I participated more in promotional and marketing programs inside and outside the province. Thanks to guaranteed quality, the honey product quickly won over consumers in many places,” Ms. Thuy said.
According to Ms. Thuy, achieving OCOP certification for honey products is a significant turning point for the company. Since achieving OCOP certification, the product market has expanded, with products available in many provinces and cities nationwide, in stores, supermarkets, shopping malls, and on e-commerce platforms. As a result, the company exports 10,000 to 20,000 liters of U Minh Thuong Melaleuca honey to the market each year.
To reassure consumers about product quality and origin, the company carefully selects raw materials, fully complies with inspection standards, and provides barcodes and QR codes for traceability so consumers can check the origin. “With the motto ‘U Minh Honey – Trust and Quality,’ all products aim for deliciousness, cleanliness, convenience, and reasonable prices to suit consumers everywhere. This is also the goal Thanh Phu hopes to achieve by contributing to enhancing the value of local products and promoting the image of U Minh Thuong to friends across the country,” Ms. Thuy said.
Besides honey products, Ms. Thuy has also developed many products combining U Minh Thuong Melaleuca honey with other ingredients, creating product lines such as honey-coated bananas and honey-coated taro... which are certified safe and hygienic and have been positively received by the market. “In the future, the company plans to develop one more OCOP product each year, a specialty and product of the U Minh Thuong region. The company plans to produce U Minh Thuong banana powder to be processed into delicious cakes. This is also one of the company's future OCOP products,” Ms. Thuy said.
According to the People's Committee of U Minh Thuong commune, the OCOP programs in the locality have created momentum for people, businesses, and cooperatives to boldly invest, link production, and improve product quality. Regarding honey products in particular, OCOP participants are also researching the combination of various ingredients to diversify products and increase the value chain…
According to Duong Quoc Khoi, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of U Minh Thuong commune, to further expand the U Minh Thuong honey brand, the locality is strengthening linkages between people, cooperatives, and businesses; and increasing the application of digital technology in promotion and consumption. “The commune will research the possibility of developing experiential tourism associated with beekeeping under the forest canopy, allowing tourists to visit U Minh Thuong not only to explore the melaleuca forest and paddle boats through the forest but also to observe the honey harvesting process and enjoy pure honey on the spot. I believe this is a unique experience that will enhance the value of OCOP products and increase the attractiveness of ecotourism,” Mr. Khoi shared.
