In response to this situation, the local authorities directed the guerrilla forces to coordinate with the main army units to intercept the enemy's raids; and organized training for the village guerrilla forces on shooting down enemy aircraft with infantry weapons.
After training and learning the operational patterns of the US-backed South Vietnamese air force, on the morning of April 24, 1966, on the banks of the Krông Ana River, a three-person guerrilla unit from Khuê Ngọc Điền commune used dummies to represent people, positioned themselves under a tree, and planted a flag nearby, about 70 meters southeast of their position. Equipped with two submachine guns and one rifle, the unit positioned itself in a triangular ambush, waiting for enemy aircraft to arrive so they could destroy them.

At 9:00 AM on April 24th, an enemy HU-1A helicopter flew in from Chu Yang Sin mountain. Upon spotting the liberation flag, suspecting our forces were present, they abruptly lowered their altitude, preparing to fire rockets. When the enemy aircraft was about 100 meters from the ambush site, three guerrilla fighters simultaneously opened fire. The helicopter was hit, lost balance, crashed near Tul village, and burst into flames.
With resourcefulness, courage, meticulous preparation, and a thorough understanding of the enemy's air force operations, the guerrilla unit of Khue Ngoc Dien commune successfully destroyed one HU-1A helicopter and killed four enemy soldiers. This victorious battle sparked a widespread movement to shoot down low-flying aircraft throughout the revolutionary base area, thereby limiting losses caused by enemy aircraft to our troops and people.
