Maracanã Stadium was the first to install a system of 12 clusters, including 28 iPhone 17 Pro devices, to assist in semi-automatic offside detection. Four more stadiums will be equipped with this system in the near future.
On its official website, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed that the Maracanã stadium has completed the installation of a semi-automatic offside system operated by 28 iPhone 17 Pro devices.
The system works by using 28 iPhone 17 Pro phones mounted on 12 clusters around the stadium, recording matches in 4K resolution at high frame rates to create a digital copy of each play. This allows referees to assess offside positions more accurately.
After installation at Maracanã, the monitoring system was not immediately put into use. Instead, the CBF will conduct further testing and calibration phases, as well as train referees to use the technology.
Once completed, the semi-automatic offside tracking system using the iPhone 17 Pro will be approved for use in official matches of the Brazilian National Championship (Série A).
"The implementation of semi-automatic offside technology is a foundational project for Brazilian football. We are closely monitoring each stage, with responsibility and technical rigor, to ensure the system is implemented safely, reliably, and in accordance with international standards," said Samir Xaud, President of the CBF, regarding the implementation of the semi-automatic offside system.
CBF added that four other stadiums, including Nilton Santos, Arena MRV, Mineirão, and Mangueirão, will also be equipped with the system, although no specific timeline for implementation has been given.
