Up until the 16th round of the 2025-2026 V-League, Becamex Ho Chi Minh City ranked 10th out of 14 teams with 18 points, 6 and 7 points ahead of the bottom two teams, SHB Da Nang and PVF-CAND respectively. That was a fairly safe position. But a disastrous nine-match streak (6 losses, 3 draws) subsequently led to the relegation of this four-time V-League champion, despite winning their final home game against Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL).
The painful part is that Becamex Ho Chi Minh City were relegated because they consistently suffered unfavorable results in their direct confrontations with their relegation rivals, even when playing at home. Becamex Ho Chi Minh City lost both matches againstSHB Da Nang with scores of 1-2 at home and 0-2 away, and lost 1-2 at home to PVF-CAND and drew 1-1 away. With such a comprehensive defeat, there's nothing to cry about!
"It's difficult to fully assess the reasons for the team's relegation. I believe the pre-season preparation was the problem, particularly the player selection and foreign player recruitment. Ideally, I wanted to field four foreign players today to put pressure on the opponent, but that wasn't possible with only two available, both of whom were substitutes," coach Hua Hien Vinh shared after the victory against HAGL.
At the beginning of the season, Becamex Ho Chi Minh City FC parted ways with their best domestic striker, Tien Linh, and then left-back Vo Minh Trong in the middle of the season. That was a significant loss.
But with the remaining squad, valued at 3.2 million euros by the transfer website Transfermarkt (ranked 6th out of 14 teams), it's difficult to excuse the defeat of Becamex Ho Chi Minh City FC. Players like Vo Hoang Minh Khoa, Ho Tan Tai, Nguyen Tran Viet Cuong, goalkeeper Tran Minh Toan, and Bui Vi Hao have all played for the Vietnamese national team.
Therefore, Coach Hứa Hiền Vinh's statement is correct but incomplete. The main reason remains the instability on the coaching bench, not only this season but almost every season before. Coach Vinh only took over the team for 4 rounds, and before he could make any changes, Becamex Ho Chi Minh City FC was relegated. Before that, Becamex Ho Chi Minh City FC was rotated by three coaches: Nguyễn Anh Đức, Ueno Nobuhiro (Japan), and Đặng Trần Chỉnh.
Each coach has a different playing style and personnel management approach. Players haven't had time to adapt to one coach's style before having to adjust to another's tactics. Furthermore, personnel changes can only be made during the mid-season transfer window. Therefore, failure is simply a consequence of an unstable and uninspired approach – something that has been almost a luxury for this very team over the past 10 years.
Hopefully, after being relegated, Becamex Ho Chi Minh City FC will receive better and more systematic investment so that they can return to the V-League immediately after one season in the First Division, or even reclaim their former glory.
