Flappy Bird, a famous game that "caused a fever" worldwide in the 2010s, suddenly reappeared on the Android platform thanks to an independent developer. However, behind this return are a series of suspicious signs that users need to consider before downloading.
According to information from the Reddit user community, a new developer has posted a "reverse engineered" version of Flappy Bird to work on modern Android devices using 64-bit architecture. The game is available via an APK file on GitHub, allowing for manual installation outside of Google Play.
However, the worrying point is that the game's source code is not public. This means that users cannot check the actual content inside the APK file, which is the minimum requirement to verify the safety of unofficially distributed software.
According to many Reddit users, when scanning the security of the APK file, they discovered signs of malware, specifically a warning about "Trojan:Script/Wacatac.B!ml". Although the developer stated that this could be an incorrect result, users are still concerned about the security of the data file above.
Another detail that raises suspicion is that the entire project was removed from GitHub shortly after it was brought to attention. Currently, the APK file is only hosted on the file-sharing service MediaFire, a platform that does not censor content and poses a high security risk. Notably, this is also the first project of this developer and they have never released any open-source software for the community to verify.
While the aforementioned Flappy Bird version has not been thoroughly vetted for safety, Android users do have an alternative. A reimagining of Flappy Bird is now available on the Epic Games Store, with gameplay similar to the original and a few new modes added. More importantly, the Epic platform has an app vetting process, ensuring a higher level of trust than installing APK files from unknown sources.
Flappy Bird was once a global phenomenon. However, with security risks becoming more complex, users are advised not to compromise security for the game's nostalgia. If the developer does not provide transparent information and publish the source code, installing an APK always poses a risk of unauthorized intrusion.
