The Argentinian player had previously faced internal disciplinary action for comments made in interviews that fueled speculation about a potential future move to Real Madrid. These statements displeased the team, forcing the coaching staff to impose a two-match suspension on the 25-year-old midfielder.
According to his agent Javier Pastore, Fernandez has had direct discussions with the club to resolve the misunderstanding. He stated that his client had no intention of causing trouble or affecting Chelsea, but simply mentioned the city of Madrid in an unclear context.
“He is the captain, one of the team’s leaders. What happened was just a misunderstanding blown out of proportion by the media,” Pastore shared. “We have spoken with the club and everything has been resolved. There are no serious issues.”
Nevertheless, the disciplinary action means Fernandez will miss the crucial Premier League match against Man City this weekend. Prior to that, he also missed Chelsea's FA Cup victory.
Coach Liam Rosenior admitted he was disappointed with his player, believing the midfielder had "crossed the line." However, after realizing his mistake, Fernandez proactively apologized to all parties involved, from the management and coach to his teammates.
The matter is now closed, but it is considered a major lesson in Fernandez's career.
