On the morning of December 9th, many Facebook users in Vietnam reported experiencing a display error regarding the timestamps on the web version of the social network. Specifically, all details about when content was posted were displayed as a long, meaningless string of characters. However, hovering the computer cursor over this area still displayed the correct post information in the pop-up window.
This display error only appears on the web version and does not affect all users. The mobile app version displays normally.
The display issue only occurs with the web version of Facebook, while the mobile app works normally.
Dung Nguyen, a Facebook user in Nha Trang, was confused about what was happening to her personal page since early morning on December 9th. However, when she asked her friends about it, she learned that not only her personal account but many other accounts were experiencing the same problem, appearing in her personal posts in the News Feed as well as in community groups.
"I'm afraid of encountering a security vulnerability or having my personal information leaked, because it looks so unusual that it makes me feel like my account has been hacked," Dung shared with an acquaintance who has experience in the tech field and was reassured that this situation is happening on a large scale.
On DownDetector, a website that records reports of outages or connection errors on many social networks and online services worldwide, Facebook is also recording error reports from many users globally, not just in Vietnam.
"Is anyone else experiencing this issue with a long string of code appearing below each post?" asked Jett Starr after reporting the bug he encountered. "I'm not the only one," another user commented in response to Jett's question. Bug reports began appearing around 7 a.m. and increased rapidly afterward.
Facebook has not yet issued any statement or taken any action to explain the issue, and it is unclear when the problem will be resolved. Recently, Facebook has frequently experienced errors during use, and those responsible for the social network often choose to remain silent and quietly address the problem. Facebook only truly responds when the incident is highly serious, for example, causing an extended system outage.
