Indonesia suffered a disappointing defeat against Iran despite playing exceptionally well. |
The 2025 Asian Futsal Championship final is considered the biggest challenge in Indonesian futsal history. The host nation's opponent is Iran, the absolute dominant force in the continent with 13 titles out of 17 editions of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Indonesia advanced to the final after causing an upset by eliminating Japan in the semi-finals, igniting hopes of a historic comeback. And the match's events showed why Indonesia excelled in reaching the final.
From the very first minutes, Indonesia played confidently and were not at all outplayed. However, the home team conceded the first goal. In the 4th minute, Hossein Tayebibidgoli scored with a dangerous shot after a corner kick from the left wing, giving Iran the lead.
The early goal conceded did not faze Indonesia. Coach Hector Souto's players quickly responded with an equalizer from Gunawan, regaining their morale and control of the game. The excitement reached a peak when Israr Megantara shone with two goals in the 9th and 10th minutes, giving Indonesia a surprising 3-1 lead.
Iran quickly demonstrated their prowess as a top Asian team, relentlessly pressing towards Ahmad Habiebie's goal. Towards the end of the first half, Iran were awarded a penalty but it was saved. However, from a subsequent free kick, they managed to reduce the deficit to 2-3, bringing a dramatic first half to a close.

Indonesia is causing many difficulties for Iran. |
The second half continued at a high tempo with exciting back-and-forth exchanges. Iran quickly equalized 3-3 after Abbasi's deflected shot, but just seconds later, a defensive error cost them dearly, allowing Samuel Eko to score and put Indonesia ahead 4-3.
After conceding a goal, Iran pressed forward, forcing Indonesia to retreat deep into defense. With only about 3 minutes left in the match, the West Asian team played power-play and got what they needed. From a well-executed attacking move in the midfield, Karimi, wearing the goalkeeper's jersey, unleashed a decisive shot to equalize the score at 4-4 for Iran.
There wasn't enough time left for either team to make a difference, forcing the match into extra time. Iran continued to take control of the game, but Indonesia defended extremely solidly.
The drama reached its climax in the final minutes. Indonesia scored from a quick corner kick combination. However, Iran equalized almost immediately with a power-play strategy, taking the match to a penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, Iran showed more composure, winning 5-4. The result was truly heartbreaking for the home team.
