According to Vice Chairman of Mu Cang Chai District People's Committee, the fire occurred at around 13:30 p.m. on March 25, in the forest area in Dao Cu Nha and Hu Tru Linh villages (bordering Che Tao and Lao Chai communes).

The area where the forest fire occurred was high in the mountains, with many trees and grass, and strong winds caused the fire to spread very quickly, making zoning and controlling the fire very difficult.

Initially, it was determined that about 2,5 hectares of regenerated forest area was completely burned, the remaining was reed grass and people's grazing land. In the past month, Yen Bai province had at least 1 forest fires in Mu Cang Chai, Tram Tau districts and Nghia Lo town.
Most recently, a large fire broke out on Ta Pu Su peak in Tuc Dan commune, Tram Tau district, lasting 2 days (March 5-7), causing nearly 3 hectares of forest to burn down.
