Hanoi – A 23-year-old woman weighing 130 kg was found by doctors to have severe fatty liver disease, with dark discoloration and fibrosis.

On April 13th, Associate Professor Nguyen Anh Tuan, Head of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Military Central Hospital 108, stated that the patient who came to the hospital for treatment of obesity had a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 50.

BMI is a body mass index used to determine whether a person's body condition is normal, underweight, overweight, or obese. A BMI between 25 and 29.99 is considered overweight, and a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

The ultrasound results revealed that the girl had severe fatty liver disease along with several metabolic disorders. During surgery, the doctors were surprised to find that her liver was dark purple and fatty, whereas a normal liver is red, smooth, and elastic.

The doctor advised the patient to lose weight urgently because the fatty liver condition was worsening, with fibrosis and irreversible cell damage. The team applied a surgical weight loss method using endoscopic gastric bypass.

Today's youth have unhealthy eating habits, leading to overweight and obesity. Excess sugar is metabolized in the liver and accumulates there. In obese individuals, triglyceride and free fatty acid levels in the blood increase, and fatty liver accumulates. In the long term, patients develop fatty liver disease, chronic hepatitis, and irreversible cirrhosis. Therefore, many studies indicate that obese individuals have a four times higher risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. This risk is 100 times higher for obese individuals with diabetes and hepatitis B or C virus infection.

Dr. Tuan advises obese individuals to lose weight to aid liver recovery. The likelihood of recovery depends on the initial extent of damage, the time frame, the weight loss method, and overall health. For more severe liver damage such as cirrhosis or liver cancer, intensive treatment with medication, medical therapies, or surgery is required, depending on the patient's condition and the severity of the disease. Among these, patients should prioritize changes in diet and lifestyle, which can reverse fatty liver disease.

Foods that are good for the liver include turmeric, lemon, apple cider vinegar, papaya, and green tea. Turmeric, in particular, helps prevent fatty liver disease and stimulates the body to digest fats, reducing the amount of fat accumulated in the liver.

Lemons are citrus fruits containing vitamin C, a natural antioxidant that helps the liver produce glutathione, which plays a crucial role in detoxifying the body. Lemons also contain the compound naringenin, which reduces liver inflammation caused by fatty liver disease.

Apple cider vinegar, extracted from apples, promotes weight loss and reduces the amount of fat accumulated in the liver.

Green tea contains antioxidants and nutrients that are important for the body, supporting brain function, reducing the risk of cancer, killing bacteria, and burning fat in the body, making it a good drink for fatty liver disease.

Dandelion helps metabolize fats in the liver, activates good liver function, and aids in treating fatty liver disease caused by obesity.

Papaya has amazing benefits in healing liver cirrhosis, helping to burn fat in the liver, which is very good for treatment.

Grapefruit juice contains powerful antioxidants that enhance liver function.
