Some people argue that AI will lead to job losses and increased inequality. Many others believe that the right application of AI can enhance productivity and create new opportunities.
Using AI is both convenient and flawed.
Generation Z (those born after 1996) are more likely to understand the impact of AI in the workplace than anyone else. EduBirdie's research surveyed 2,000 young Gen Z individuals in the US to find out how they use ChatGPT at work.
36% of Gen Z employees use AI to improve work efficiency. On the other hand, many struggle with feelings of guilt and dependence associated with constantly using AI. 18% say AI hinders creativity and critical thinking.
These mixed reactions may stem from the fact that, compared to previous generations, Gen Z is more aware of the potential consequences of technology use. They grew up in an era of rapidly changing technology, with many topics revolving around the social and ethical impacts of AI. Therefore, they can't hide their feeling of "unease about becoming dependent on AI for their work."
Another contributing factor could be a lack of necessary education and training on how to use AI appropriately and effectively. Research reveals that 20% of Gen Z respondents struggle with using AI in the workplace. Even 2% were fired for using ChatGPT.
I can't believe I've been replaced by AI.
Despite the challenges, AI also offers many benefits. Research shows that nearly half of Gen Z individuals agree that AI makes them more creative. One in seven people say AI has helped them increase their income.
This shows that AI has the potential to enhance productivity and create new opportunities, especially in fields that require creativity and innovation.
The survey results show that 61% of Gen Z use ChatGPT for document searching and research, 56% use the technology to generate ideas and solutions, and 42% use it to write and create content. Only 23% use AI to edit their resumes to help them stand out to employers.
A recent survey also revealed that Generation Z is not very concerned about AI replacing them in the workplace. Only 9% believe this is likely to happen by 2024. However, 61% believe AI could take over their jobs within the next 10 years.
In particular, because AI is frequently used to write programming languages, those working in this field worry about whether they will be replaced by AI. However, while AI-powered applications like ChatGPT have vast amounts of data to program, they lack the experience and expertise necessary to solve very specific or complex problems.
