Panama pulled off a surprise with their dominant performance.
Despite being considered inferior in terms of squad quality and World Cup experience, Panama entered the match with extreme confidence and a sharp style of play. As early as the second minute, Cecilio Waterman sent the stadium into a frenzy with a powerful long-range shot that forced goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi to make a diving save.
Throughout the first half, the Central American representatives maintained a dominant performance, controlling possession exceptionally well and constantly pressing, causing the Ghanaian defense to be in disarray on numerous occasions.
On the other side of the pitch, Ghana displayed a rather lackluster performance. Expected stars like Jordan Ayew and Antoine Semenyo failed to make much of an impact, while their attacks, largely relying on Kamaldeen Sulemana's speed, lacked sharpness in the final touches.
Ghana's most notable chance before halftime was Marvin Senaya's shot that went wide of the post in the 45th minute, ending the first 45 minutes goalless.
Tactical adjustments and moments of brilliance
In the second half, coach Carlos Queiroz proactively instructed Ghana to increase the tempo and pressure. Substitutions bringing on Issahaku Fatawu, Brandon Thomas-Asante, and Jonas Adjetey helped improve the African team's performance.
However, Panama maintained their disciplined style of play and even created several sharp counter-attacks that kept goalkeeper Ati Zigi busy before he had to leave the field due to injury.
In a closely contested match that seemed destined for a goalless draw, drama erupted in the 90+5th minute. Following a well-executed attack, Brandon Thomas-Asante skillfully broke down the left wing and delivered a perfect cross.
Caleb Yirenkyi appeared at the right moment, calmly turned and unleashed a close-range shot that beat goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera, securing a 1-0 victory to the ecstatic cheers of Ghanaian fans.
The narrow victory temporarily puts Ghana in second place in Group L, level on 3 points with England but behind on goal difference. For Panama, this defeat brings much regret as they put up a courageous fight and almost earned a historic point.
This victory is an important morale boost for Ghana before facing more challenging obstacles in the "group of death" against England and Croatia.
In the next round of matches on June 24th, Ghana will face England at 3:00 AM, while Panama hopes to secure their first points when they take on Croatia at 6:00 AM on the same day.
