According to Live Science, the charred meteorite fell and hit the bedroom of Suzy Kop's family in Hopewell town, New Jersey at 13 pm on May 8. The meteorite caused heavy damage to the room but did not cause any casualties.
It pierced the ceiling and landed in a corner of the bedroom. It resembles a metal rod about 15 cm wide. “I touched it because I thought it was just a rock… but it was very warm.”, Kop said to CBS News.
Derrick Pitts, an astronomer at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, thinks the meteorite could be between 4 and 5 billion years old. This could be the debris of the Eta Aquarid meteor shower (usually taking place from April 19 to May 4 every year).
During its peak days, Eta Aquarid can produce hundreds of "shooting stars" per hour – most of which burn up in the atmosphere.
According to NASA, these meteorites are rock debris formed by Comet Halley, and this comet usually passes by Earth every 75 to 79 years.
Many meteorites enter Earth's atmosphere, but most burn up before hitting the ground. This is not the first time a meteorite has fallen and caused damage.
According to US scientists, the meteorite that fell at Hopewell is estimated to be up to 4,6 billion years old and may be a fragment of Halley's comet.
