FIFA sparks controversy with new ticket prices. |
Specifically, fans will have to spend $10,990 for the most expensive ticket to watch the 2026 World Cup final. This figure is more than $2,000 higher than the previous sales period.
This move comes shortly after the 2026 World Cup qualifiers concluded, amidst a surge in demand for tickets. Previously, following the draw in December, the price of the highest-category tickets (Category 1) was listed at $8,680 . However, in a short time, this figure has been significantly increased, surprising many fans.
It wasn't just the top-tier tickets that saw significant price increases; other categories also experienced substantial hikes. Second-tier tickets for the final at MetLife Stadium rose from $5,575 to $7,380 , while third-tier tickets jumped from $4,185 to $5,785 .

The sharp increase in ticket prices is believed to be a consequence of the "dynamic pricing" mechanism, a flexible pricing model based on market demand, which is facing much criticism from fans.
The explanation is that ticket prices will increase or decrease depending on the level of interest at any given time, similar to how airlines or online ticketing platforms operate. However, for a global sporting event like the World Cup, applying this mechanism has led many fans to believe that FIFA is over-commercializing the tournament.
In response to the backlash, FIFA offered a conciliatory solution by pledging to allocate a quantity of discounted tickets, around $60 , to participating national football federations. However, the number of these tickets is quite limited, estimated at only 400 to 700 tickets per match per team, which is unlikely to meet the enormous demand from fans worldwide.
