On February 5.2, NBC reported that a lucky dog was rescued by US Coast Guard (USCG) officers after being stuck in a container at a port in Texas.
The dog, later named Connie, was stuck in a container intended to be taken abroad and had been inside for at least eight days before being discovered on January 8.
Connie was rescued by USCG marine science technicians including Bryan Wainscott, Lucas Loe, Ryan McMahon and Jose Reyes. At that time, they randomly checked the containers and heard barking and scratching from inside one container, according to a statement from the USCG Heartland region (Texas).
The above container was stacked more than 7 m high and had to be lowered by a crane. “When they lowered the container and opened the door, a dog jumped out,” according to USCG Heartland. The staff said the dog was tired, hungry and very happy to meet the rescuers.
Photos posted on the USCG Heartland Facebook page show Connie wagging her tail, sniffing around and drinking water after escaping. Coast Guard officials said Connie was stranded for at least eight days without water or food, so she was skinny and dirty when she was rescued.
Authorities have not yet determined where this container came from, but it was filled with used cars, most likely on their way to be sold abroad for spare parts. Based on this information, officer Corrine Zilnicki of the USCG Heartland believes that it was most likely in a car in a used car lot when it was accidentally put into a container.
Connie was taken to the Pasadena Animal Shelter for care, before being taken to the animal rescue organization Forever Changed Animal Rescue (FCAR). They plan to find “a wonderful home that deserves to be lived in.” FCAR's Facebook post had many comments from people wanting to adopt Connie.
