Recently, the song "Say mot doi vi em" sung by AI has been "causing a fever" on social networks. Sharing with Lao Dong reporter, Hua Kim Tuyen frankly expressed her opinion on the issue of AI composing music and "singing" like a singer.
Hua Kim Tuyen is Music Director of Pretty Sister Biking Price season 2.
What do you think about the trend of AI participating in composing and "singing" like a singer?
- I think every era gives birth to something new and forces all creators to accept the game.
In the past, musicians had to write notes and play instruments. With the development of digital technology, many people, even without knowing music theory, can still make beats and create melodies on software. This was once opposed because it was considered to destroy the academic nature of music.
Then when rap appeared, people said that rap lost the melody and beauty of music because the lyrics of rap were too "worldly". But in the end, rap was still accepted and became a part of music. music mass
I consider AI as a tool of the times. It has penetrated into life: instead of asking for a consultant, I can ask ChatGPT; AI also creates images, music, designs… No matter who opposes it, AI still exists as a part of society. If we do not accept it, the ones who lose in the end are us. Therefore, as a creator, I choose to accept the “rules of the game” of AI.
But surely there are two sides to AI composing music?
- I see AI like every other problem in the world : Everything has two sides, the good side and the bad side.
I can't help it, so instead of just looking at the negative side, I choose to look at the positive side.
First of all, I have to admit that AI is doing quite well in many areas. Therefore, it creates a positive pressure for artists.
Because if it was just writing empty lyrics to fill a song, or creating a simple melody, AI could have done it.
This forces musicians who truly want to pursue the profession to invest their brains, to search for and shape their own color, to develop their personal mark to become different from what AI creates.
I know many artists, both in Vietnam and around the world, have used AI to support their work. That’s okay, as long as you see AI as a tool. When you run out of ideas, you can ask AI to inspire you, then develop it into your own style.
What do you think about AI-composed music?
- AI is just a technology that synthesizes and reprocesses what already exists, it has no personal memories or life breath, nor does it possess a separate perspective.
That’s why AI-written lyrics are often generic and lack emotional depth. And that’s where real artists are left: bringing new experiences, emotions, and perspectives that machines can’t replace.
Have you tried composing music with the help of AI?
- I don't think AI can support me much in my compositions. I joke that I have to "take on" 10 AIs at the same time.
Even though I tried it, even bought the premium version, the AI still wrote very general, scattered, and not concise, only occasionally had a few sentences that made me "wow" with delight.
To get a satisfactory result, I had to enter all kinds of commands, try hundreds of demos (drafts). In the end, I found it took more time than doing it myself. compose.
But I don't deny that AI also has its own strengths.
I think people should also see AI as a powerful assistant that helps them do better, instead of seeing it as a threat or competitor.
What do you think about singers who don't want to spend money on copyright so they use AI-composed music to sing?
- There are singers who do not have the means to invest in their products so they choose AI support, that is not wrong. But if they only rely on AI, their creativity will stop at that level.
When everyone uses the same tools, the “standard” becomes equal. To excel, they still have to find a producer to breathe human life into the product.
I believe that over time, many artists will realize that working with producers and real people always brings more emotion, depth, and co-creation than machines. So, personally, I am not afraid of AI.
In your opinion, what are the limits that AI can hardly overcome compared to humans?
- It is true that AI develops very quickly and the future is difficult to predict. But through observation over the past 2 years, I see that it still stops at a certain level: no emotions, no experiences - the factors that make up a human and art.
No matter how much AI develops, it will be difficult to overcome that boundary.
On the contrary, artists who don't think and just create cliches will feel scared, because AI can do exactly the same thing.
But that is also a signal forcing each person to improve themselves, to invest more so that the product has its own mark, has real breath and emotion.
