To ensure the safety of summer-autumn rice production, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection requires localities to closely monitor the emergence and damage caused by rice blast disease, brown planthopper, and white-backed planthopper, especially under favorable weather conditions and on susceptible varieties; and to promptly implement control measures in areas with high disease rates to limit spread.
The Department also noted that localities in the Southern region should prepare good seeds, thoroughly prepare the land, closely monitor the development of rice planthoppers attracted to light traps, and closely follow the local meteorological and hydrological conditions to ensure safe rice planting. Provinces in the South Central coastal region and the Central Highlands should closely monitor the development of major pests affecting summer-autumn and autumn-winter rice crops to proactively implement control measures. They should actively promote and encourage farmers to continuously eradicate rats and collect golden apple snails using various methods.
Over the past week, in the northern provinces, rice blast disease has occurred, affecting susceptible varieties, mainly in areas already severely affected by leaf blast. The severity of damage ranges from mild to moderate, with localized severe damage. Brown planthoppers and white-backed planthoppers, mainly third-generation nymphs, continue to cause damage to late-season rice crops and susceptible varieties during the heading-ripening stage. In the North Central region, pests such as golden apple snails, rats, and thrips are showing an increasing tendency to damage seedlings and newly sown summer-autumn rice in the provinces.
In the South Central coastal region, rice leaf rollers, stem borers, and rice blast disease are increasing, causing damage to early summer-autumn rice crops during the tillering and heading stages. Additionally, thrips are causing damage to main summer-autumn rice crops during the sowing, seedling, and tillering stages. In the Central Highlands, rice stem borers, rice leaf rollers, rice blast disease, and root rot are causing scattered damage to early summer-autumn rice crops during the tillering and heading stages. Thrips, root rot, and nematodes are causing scattered damage to summer-autumn rice crops during the seedling and tillering stages.
In the southern provinces, brown planthoppers in the fields are commonly in stages 2-3, causing widespread damage ranging from mild to moderate, with localized severe damage to rice during the heading and flowering stages. Additionally, blast disease, bacterial leaf blight, and black kernel disease are likely to continue developing and causing increased damage to rice crops currently in the flowering-ripening stages.
