A regular meeting of the "Distinctive Van Lang" Cultural and Artistic Club in Van Lang commune.

Over time, these precious cultural heritages have been preserved and disseminated through grassroots arts and culture clubs. From schools to villages, more and more clubs are emerging, operating in a more organized and professional manner.

For several months now, at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Primary School in Duc Xuan Ward, students have been enthusiastically participating in traditional art classes on singing Then folk songs and playing the Tinh lute every week after regular classes. The "instructors" are dedicated artisans passionate about preserving traditional culture.

During the lesson, the students were introduced to the zither, receiving detailed instructions on how to hold and use this unique instrument. Those who were proficient would play the zither while singing traditional folk songs. Hoang Bao Chau, a student in class 5A, shared: “Thanks to the dedicated guidance from the teachers and artisans, we understood and thoroughly enjoyed the extracurricular lesson. We feel proud to be proficient in and able to perform the folk melodies of our ethnic group…”

According to Ms. Truong Thi Hang, the school principal, incorporating traditional culture into school activities not only helps students understand and appreciate traditional cultural identity but also contributes to forming an awareness of preserving and promoting heritage. The school always proactively coordinates with the local authorities and the cultural sector to develop appropriate and engaging content for students.

At Ngan Son Ethnic Boarding High School, the school's traditional performing arts group, though newly launched, has already become a vibrant and meaningful activity for students. This model is highly appreciated because it brings together a large number of students, contributing to fostering pride and love for traditional culture among ethnic minority students who have to leave home to study.

According to Duong Phuong Que, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ngan Son commune, maintaining the activities of performing arts groups in schools has created an important foundation for discovering and nurturing young artistic talents. Through this, these children become the core force in preserving and spreading the national cultural identity...

During regular activities, students are guided in practicing characteristic folk songs and dances such as bowl dance, fan dance, Then singing, and Tinh lute playing. This model is not limited to the school. Many students, after participating in the performing arts group, continue to be involved with local cultural clubs, creating a continuous legacy between generations.

It is noteworthy that in the northern localities of Thai Nguyen province, the work of preserving and promoting traditional cultural values does not focus on increasing the number of participants but rather on systematic and professional training. In Van Lang commune, a remote and disadvantaged area, the "Van Lang Unique" cultural and artistic club, established just over six months ago, has grown from nearly 10 initial members to 46 today.

Since the beginning of the year, members of the Club have organized a culinary culture experience program; participated in scriptwriting, directing, and designing the opening ceremony of the Van Lang Commune Spring Festival with the theme "Van Lang Convergence"; developed and rehearsed a special cultural program to welcome Spring 2026; directed participation in 3 performances at the Spring Festival 2026; and participated in 2 cultural exchange performances at the Na Ri Commune Spring Festival... In May, the Club opened classes to teach Then singing and Dan Tinh playing to young people and Then enthusiasts in the area.

Club leader Hoang Thi Dung shared: “We hope and strive to make the “Unique Van Lang” cultural and artistic club a destination, a place to gather, spread, and connect the unique cultural values of the ethnic communities in the area; and at the same time, promote and introduce the land and people of Van Lang commune to friends and tourists near and far. These actions have contributed to preserving and promoting, preventing the fading and forgetting of the precious cultural heritage values of the ethnic groups.”

From operating in confined spaces, many folk art clubs here have expanded their scope of activity and established their reputation, among which the Sac Cham Then Singing and Dan Tinh Playing Club is particularly noteworthy.

Established in 2019, the club brings together over 60 members of various ages from many communes and wards. To date, it has become a reputable institution for teaching Then singing and Tinh playing, and has participated in many major festivals in the province and tourism promotion programs in many northern provinces. Club members also compose and adapt ancient Then melodies into catchy and memorable songs praising their homeland, which are well-received by the public.

Many performing arts groups and folk clubs have earned income from preserving and performing folk songs and dances. In the Ba Be Lake area, dozens of clubs and performing arts groups from villages and hamlets perform nightly traditional folk songs, zither music, bowl dances, fan dances, etc., for tourists to enjoy.

Ms. Trieu Kim Xuyen, Vice President of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Tourism Association, shared that, in addition to the picturesque scenery of Ba Be Lake, the performances by the folk art troupe have contributed to creating an attraction for tourists visiting this region.

According to Lam Ngoc Du, Director of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Cultural Center, in recent times, the unit has chaired and coordinated with localities to preserve many intangible cultural heritages, and established clubs for preserving and performing folk songs and dances in villages, hamlets, and schools in the northern part of the province in particular and the whole province in general.

In the coming period, the Center will continue to advise the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to promote the preservation and development of intangible cultural heritage, realizing the goal of the Resolution of the First Provincial Party Congress (2025-2030 term), which is that by 2030, each commune and ward will have at least one cultural and artistic club to link with tourism development, especially in mountainous communes.
