Associate Professor Dr. Tang Chi Thuong – Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, assessed that after 50 years of formation and development, the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine has affirmed its position as a leading unit in traditional medicine, preserving and promoting the essence of traditional national medicine, proactively integrating and closely combining with modern medicine, standardizing professional procedures, developing treatment techniques, promoting scientific research, and gradually improving the quality of medical examination and treatment.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has identified the strong development of a combined Eastern and Western medicine model as a long-term strategic direction and appropriate to the characteristics of a megacity like Ho Chi Minh City. This includes building a synchronized network of traditional medicine from specialized centers to primary healthcare facilities, linked to initial care, chronic disease management, rehabilitation, and elderly care.

"These directions are entirely consistent with Resolution 72 on building an equitable, efficient, modern, and integrated healthcare system, in which traditional medicine plays an important role in primary healthcare," Associate Professor Dr. Tang Chi Thuong stated.

Developing traditional medicine in a way that preserves, inherits, and promotes it.

According to People's Physician, Associate Professor, and Doctor Dau Xuan Canh - Chairman of the Vietnam Traditional Medicine Association, Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW of the Politburo clearly states: "Developing a Vietnamese medical system that is advanced, scientific, modern, equitable, effective, and internationally integrated; in which traditional medicine and folk medicine are an important part that needs to be preserved, inherited, and developed." This is a significant overarching direction, creating a solid political foundation for the development of folk medicine in the new era.

In particular, the national strategy for protecting, caring for, and improving the health of the people until 2030, with a vision to 2045, clearly defines the goal of developing a modern, internationally integrated healthcare system. In this strategy, traditional medicine and folk medicine are oriented to develop in parallel, effectively complementing modern medicine to serve the increasingly diverse needs of the people.

The Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine received a commendation flag from the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.

Accordingly, it is necessary to develop traditional medicine on a scientific, standardized, and modernized foundation. Research and application of science and technology, along with digital transformation, should be promoted to ensure safety, effectiveness, and gradual integration into the modern healthcare system. Traditional medicine should be closely integrated with modern medicine in public health care, focusing on the patient, improving the effectiveness of disease prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, especially for chronic diseases, non-communicable diseases, and elderly care.

To conserve, develop, and effectively utilize national medicinal plant resources; to develop clean and sustainable medicinal plant cultivation areas; to strengthen linkages between research, production, and the market; and to enhance the economic and medicinal value of Vietnamese medicinal plants.

Building and developing a high-quality workforce in traditional medicine, focusing on training a team of doctors and scientists who are both proficient in traditional medicine and knowledgeable in modern medicine, possess foreign language skills, and have the capacity for research and international cooperation. Promoting international cooperation and enhancing the position of Vietnamese traditional medicine on the international stage.

Professor Dr. Trinh Thi Dieu Thuong, Director of the Department of Traditional Medicine Management (Ministry of Health), assessed that in recent years, traditional medicine has achieved many remarkable accomplishments. The healthcare system has been built and developed in all provinces and cities with promising indicators; each province and city has a traditional medicine hospital. General hospitals have traditional medicine departments, meeting the needs of the people from the central to the grassroots level. In addition, more than 20 training institutions from undergraduate to postgraduate levels have adequately met the demand for human resources. Scientific research, development, and technology transfer in traditional medicine have also achieved increasingly significant results.
