| Raising their zithers, the monks sing Then songs for tourists during their journeys. |
Every morning, while the mist still covers the lake, Hoa is already at the boat dock welcoming guests. If tourists want to learn about the local culture or listen to Then or Lượn folk songs, she will accompany them on the boat throughout the journey.
Hoa said she has loved the Then folk songs since she was a child and wants to stay connected to her birthplace. She hopes that tourists coming to Ba Be will not only be captivated by the scenery but also appreciate the cultural beauty of the Tay people through their stories, songs, and local way of life. Therefore, Hoa goes to the boat dock early every day to welcome guests. If tourists need a tour guide or want to listen to Then folk songs, Luon folk songs, or Tinh lute music, she will accompany them on the boat throughout the trip.
Amidst the vast landscape, the melodies of Then songs and the sounds of the Tinh lute blend with the rhythmic rowing, making the journey even more enchanting. For Hoa, the tour guide is not just a narrator but also a guardian of Tay culture through stories about Ba Be Lake, the spring festival, local life, and the humanistic significance of the ancient Then melodies.
Recently, Hoa won third prize at the 2026 Thai Nguyen Province Excellent Tourist Guide Competition. When asked about that achievement, she just smiled gently and said, "The most valuable thing is that after each trip, I learn more and become more confident."
Điều Hòa is deeply concerned with preserving the pristine beauty of Ba Bể Lake. On every trip, she always reminds tourists not to litter in the lake and encourages the local people to help protect the environment. For this Tay girl, each boat trip, each chanted Then song, is a way of preserving the soul of Ba Bể today.
