The kitchen on the ship was barely big enough for a few people to maneuver among pots and pans that bobbed up and down with the waves. But it was in that cramped kitchen that the soldiers maintained a warm and enduring "rear guard" for the ship throughout its long voyages.
To prepare meals on board the ship, the soldiers had to wake up very early.
From early morning, while the sea was still shrouded in mist, the soldiers of Brigade 127, Squadron of the 5th Naval Region, began their familiar tasks: picking vegetables, washing rice, lighting the stove, and tending the fire. Each action was carefully calculated to suit the unique conditions at sea. Even a single strong wave could tilt the rice pot or spill the soup pan, so every movement had to be neat, steady, and full of experience .
Vegetables are commonplace on land, but they become incredibly valuable in the middle of the ocean.
In the cramped kitchen, there's no room for haste or carelessness. But it is also there that the sense of responsibility and sharing among the sailors is most clearly evident. Meals are not just about satisfying hunger, but also a way for the men to care for each other, maintaining a stable rhythm of life amidst the vast ocean.
For Major Tran Ngoc Dung (512th Squadron, 127th Brigade), taking care of meals for his comrades is a simple happiness for a naval soldier.
Professional military officer Major Tran Ngoc Dung, Artillery Squadron Commander, Ship 251, Squadron 512, Brigade 127, who has spent over 13 years working in the ship's kitchen, shared very gently: "Cooking is a joy for me. But cooking for comrades at sea is a completely different feeling. On the ship, each meal is the collective effort of the whole crew. We just hope that everyone has a hot, nutritious meal so that we can focus on our duties."
Many delegates in the working group participated in preparing ingredients and shared cooking tasks with the soldiers on the ship.
The hot meals passed from hand to hand after each shift not only provide energy but also carry the quiet bond of camaraderie. It's the strength that helps soldiers stand firm against the storms, both literally and figuratively.
When directly joining the soldiers in the kitchen, many delegates in the working group could not hide their emotions. Out at sea, each grain of rice, each bunch of vegetables suddenly became much more precious than on land. Things that seemed so ordinary made us slow down, look more closely, and feel more deeply.
Ms. Le Thi Thu Ha, representative of the Northern Power Corporation, was happy to directly participate with the soldiers in preparing meals on the ship.
Ms. Le Thi Thu Ha, representative of the Northern Power Corporation, said while still fumbling with knives and cutting boards on the ship: "Seeing the soldiers cooking in these stormy conditions, I was truly moved. These simple meals helped us understand more clearly the silent sacrifices of the naval soldiers."
The soldiers carefully arranged the dining tables on the ship, maintaining order and a cozy atmosphere amidst the vast ocean.
Ms. Ngo Thanh Vy, representing the Vinh Long Provincial Youth Union, shared: “On land, a meal is a very normal thing. But on a ship, it's a whole process of effort. From small things like this, I feel more clearly the spirit of discipline, camaraderie, and willpower of the naval officers and soldiers.”
Without fancy food or elaborate meals, the warm and heartfelt meals shared in the small kitchen amidst the vast ocean have given strength to the officers and soldiers of the 5th Naval Region, allowing them to focus on their work. For the delegation, these were quiet yet profound moments, where gratitude was forged from genuine experiences and everyday sharing with those who are guarding the homeland's seas and islands day and night.
