Upholding the medical ethics of a physician.

With over 30 years dedicated to the medical field, Dr. Nguyen Van Dung (Head of Oncology Department 1, Bai Chay Hospital) is not only known as a highly experienced cancer treatment specialist but also as a role model of dedication and responsibility, always wholeheartedly devoted to his patients. From complex surgeries to voluntary blood donations, Dr. Dung's quiet acts have contributed to spreading a positive image of a physician with strong medical ethics.

Early on a Sunday morning in early April 2026, Dr. Dung was present at the blood donation center of Bai Chay Hospital to participate in voluntary blood donation. This was the 12th time he had donated blood and the 6th consecutive year he had done so. As someone who directly performs surgery and treats cancer patients, Dr. Dung understands better than anyone the significance of each unit of blood in long and complex surgeries. “During surgery, some patients lose a lot of blood, and if there isn't a timely blood supply, it's very dangerous. Therefore, whenever I can donate blood, I'm always ready. At the same time, I also encourage colleagues, relatives, and friends to participate. Each blood donation is another opportunity to contribute to saving patients' lives,” Dr. Dung shared.

These simple words stem from the practical experience of someone who has spent many years in operating rooms, witnessing life-or-death moments where every unit of blood is crucial. Beyond donating blood, Dr. Dung actively participates in free medical examinations, provides free medicine, and gives gifts to people in disadvantaged areas; he also mobilizes relatives and friends to support cancer patients in difficult circumstances. At the hospital, Dr. Dung regularly collaborates with the Social Work Team to provide timely assistance to those in need, instilling confidence in patients throughout their treatment journey.

What Dr. Dung always worries about is not only the effectiveness of treatment, but also how to help patients maintain their trust and feel secure accompanying the doctor throughout the treatment process. The case of Mr. Vi Van Gieng (86 years old, Tien Yen commune) is an example. Three years ago, during a check-up at Bai Chay Hospital, he was diagnosed with both stomach cancer and colon cancer. At his advanced age, facing two types of cancer at the same time, he and his family were understandably confused and worried.

After a thorough examination and assessment of the patient's condition, Dr. Dung and his team developed a suitable treatment plan. The patient underwent gastrectomy, colectomy with lymph node dissection, and colostomy. Following the first surgery, the patient's health stabilized, and a subsequent surgery was performed to close the colostomy. The treatment process was safe and followed the established protocol.

Ms. Vi Thi Lien, Mr. Gieng's daughter, shared: “When my father was diagnosed, our family was very worried because he was old and had weak health. But after Dr. Dung personally examined, advised, and explained everything thoroughly, we felt more at ease and decided to treat him at Bai Chay Hospital. Throughout the treatment process, my father received dedicated care and encouragement from the doctors and nurses, so his health gradually improved, and his spirits also lifted. Currently, my father's health is stable, and he lives a normal life. Each time he has a follow-up appointment, Dr. Dung examines him and provides very thorough guidance. My family appreciates not only the positive treatment results but also the doctor's dedication and approachability, which gives us more confidence in accompanying my father through his illness.”

After graduating from Hai Phong Medical University in 1994, Dr. Dung began working at the Cam Pha Medical Center. Having held various positions from the grassroots level to the provincial level, he chose to dedicate himself to surgery, especially oncology – a specialized field requiring strong professional skills and a high sense of responsibility.

In 2011, Dr. Dung transferred to Bai Chay Hospital, and in 2013 he was entrusted with the position of Head of the Oncology Department. Since 2018, he has been the Head of Oncology Department 1. In this role, he and the department have gradually improved the quality of treatment, mastered many advanced techniques, and helped patients access quality medical services right in their local area. In 2024 and 2025 alone, the department treated over 10,400 inpatients; Dr. Dung personally performed over 1,300 oncology surgeries, including many complex cases.

Throughout his career, Dr. Dung has always focused on scientific research and the application of new techniques in practice, contributing to improving the quality of cancer diagnosis and treatment. As the head of the department, he consistently reminds the medical staff to maintain professional conduct and treat patients like family. Simultaneously, Dr. Dung directly trains, mentors, and guides eight surgeons in the department, helping these young doctors mature and become capable of independently handling major surgical cases.

Having directly performed surgery and treated thousands of cancer patients, Dr. Dung deeply understands the importance of early detection. Therefore, he always hopes that people will raise their awareness of disease prevention and proactively undergo regular health checkups to ensure timely detection and treatment. Dr. Dung also always keeps in mind the words of Professor and Doctor Nguyen Chan Hung, former Chairman of the National Cancer Prevention Association: "Cancer – early detection leads to cure; if left untreated, it becomes incurable."
