The Information, a technology news site, reported on April 19th, citing two sources close to the matter, that Google is in talks with Marvell Technology to develop two new chips to run artificial intelligence (AI) models more efficiently.
One of the two chips is a memory processor designed to work in conjunction with a tensor processor (TPU), a specialized integrated circuit developed by Google specifically to accelerate machine learning tasks. The other chip is a new TPU for running AI models.
Google is working to make its TPU a viable alternative to the graphics processors that Nvidia currently dominates the market.
TPU sales have become a major driver of revenue growth for Google's cloud computing services as the company aims to demonstrate to investors that its AI investments are yielding returns.
Google and Marvell aim to finalize the memory processor design within the next year before moving it to trial production.
