Google appeals the Epic case, proposing a delay in changes to Android and Google Play.

On October 7th, a judge in a US district court issued a ruling regarding Google Play. According to the ruling, Google cannot prevent developers from discussing app pricing or availability with users outside of Google Play, nor can it prevent developers from providing links to download apps from sources other than Google Play.

Furthermore, Google cannot force developers to use the Google Play Billing payment system in apps distributed through Google Play, nor can it prohibit the use of in-app payment methods other than Google Play Billing.

This ruling also imposes several other restrictions on developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), effective November 1st and lasting for three years. Most importantly, Google will have to allow the distribution of third-party app stores on Google Play and grant access to Play's app catalog within eight months. Both of these requirements will also be in effect for three years.

Google's lawyers argued that the liability ruling against the company was "grossly flawed." Furthermore, Google argued that having to implement the first changes within the next three weeks would create "unacceptable security and safety risks" to the Android ecosystem.

One notable point Google raised in its appeal was: "Apple, which requires all apps to go through its proprietary App Store, was not found guilty of monopolistic practices. Meanwhile, Google, which integrates choice for device manufacturers and users into the Android operating system, was accused of monopolistic practices."

Google currently has over 100 million Android device users in the US and more than 500,000 developers in this market.
