Alphabet and Nvidia have joined major venture capital funds to invest in Safe Superintelligence (SSI), a startup co-founded by Ilya Sutskever, former Chief Scientific Officer of OpenAI.
According to a source close to the matter, just a few months after its establishment, SSI has quickly become one of the most valuable Artificial Intelligence (AI) startups today.
This investment demonstrates the renewed interest of tech giants and infrastructure providers in strategically investing in startups developing advanced AI – a field that increasingly requires significant computing power. Alphabet, Google's parent company, also announced earlier this week that it will provide SSI with access to its self-developed AI chips (TPUs) through its cloud computing division.
According to sources, SSI was recently valued at approximately $32 billion in a funding round led by Greenoaks. The company is now one of the world's most prominent AI startups, largely thanks to the reputation of Mr. Sutskever, who has a vision for the future development of AI.
Like many of its competitors, SSI is in great need of chips. Alphabet's parallel moves—from the parent company to its cloud computing division—show that its AI hardware strategy is shifting, amid the rise of AI research labs like SSI and Anthropic.
Initially, Google only used TPU chips for internal operations. However, the agreement to supply a large quantity of these chips to SSI for AI research marked a new step in expanding revenue from external customers.
Meanwhile, AI developers have traditionally favored Nvidia's graphics processing unit (GPU) chips, which hold over 80% of the AI chip market share.
However, according to two sources, SSI is currently primarily using TPUs instead of GPUs in its research and development activities.
Google and Nvidia now also have to compete with Amazon, which is developing its own line of AI processing chips, called Trainium and Inferentia.
Since 2023, Amazon has announced that Anthropic will use technology based on these chips. Last December, Amazon announced it would supply Anthropic's new supercomputer with hundreds of thousands of internal chips.
Currently, it is becoming a common trend for major cloud providers to heavily invest in AI startups.
These are startups that both build the underlying AI models and are important customers using their computing infrastructure.
For example, Amazon and Google have both invested in Anthropic, while Microsoft has placed a big bet on OpenAI. Nvidia has also provided funding for both OpenAI and xAI – the AI company founded by billionaire Elon Musk.
