To fulfill its assigned mission, starting on March 1st, the Dien Bien Provincial Military Command officially assigned an engineering company to Ban May commune to clear mines and unexploded ordnance over an area of 170 hectares. This area has complex terrain, with many hills, deep ravines, and dense vegetation, posing a high risk of accidents due to the presence of various types of bombs, mines, and explosive remnants of war.
Colonel Luu Van Duan, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Dien Bien Provincial Military Command, said: "For us, being assigned to clear mines in Ban May commune this time is not simply about handling unexploded ordnance left over from the war, but a sacred mission, expressing our gratitude to those who fell for the Fatherland. We are always aware that every square meter of land cleared will create better conditions for forces searching for and collecting the remains of fallen soldiers to access the site more safely and quickly."

"Each officer and soldier assigned to Ban May has pledged to uphold the spirit of Dien Bien Phu with the highest sense of responsibility, ensuring absolute safety and resolutely completing the entire mine clearance operation on the assigned 170 hectares, contributing to the successful implementation of the '500-Day and Night Campaign' in the area of Military Region 2," Colonel Luu Van Duan added.
Captain Pham Hong Son, Company Commander of the Engineering Company of the Dien Bien Provincial Military Command, who directly participated in the mine clearance operation in Ban May, emotionally stated: "We understand that behind these cleared areas lies the hope of countless families of fallen soldiers anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones. Therefore, despite the arduous and difficult work, each person assigned to the task strives their best, working tirelessly day and night. Everyone tries their best to clear more land each day."
In that spirit, in just under 100 days of operation (from March 1st to the present), despite facing many difficulties regarding weather conditions, rugged terrain, and a large workload, the Engineering Company of the Dien Bien Provincial Military Command has completed the clearance of 89.01 hectares, finding more than 200 artillery and mortar shells of various types, 86 landmines, and more than 700 rounds of landmines.

Behind these numbers lie countless drops of sweat from the combat engineers who braved rain, sun, wind, fog, and scorching heat on steep mountain slopes, carrying equipment over dozens of kilometers through the jungle. Many suspected locations were deep within dense vegetation, making the search, verification, and disposal of explosives even more difficult. However, with a sense of responsibility and gratitude towards previous generations, the officers and soldiers overcame all difficulties.

Corporal Thào A Tình shared: "Participating in this mission for the first time, I truly understood the immense sacrifices and losses of previous generations. There were times when we unearthed landmines or warheads that had been buried for decades, and I understood even more the value of peace today. I felt I needed to try harder and make more effort to complete the mission well, contributing to bringing the fallen soldiers back to their families."
Sharing the same sentiment, Sergeant Thào A Chủ, the squad leader, confided: "Working in the mountains and forests, in such a treacherous terrain, we always encourage each other to persevere. When I see dangerous explosive devices safely removed from the ground, I feel very proud. Every meter of land cleared not only ensures safety but also contributes to making the search for the remains of fallen soldiers easier."

There is still much work ahead as more than 80 hectares of land need to be cleared, but with the courage, will, and determination of the soldiers of the Vietnam People's Army, the officers and soldiers of the Dien Bien Provincial Military Command are committed to staying in the area, enduring the sun and rain, striving to excellently complete the assigned tasks, contributing to bringing the heroic martyrs back to their comrades, hometowns, and families in the heartfelt anticipation of the people nationwide.
