" Right from the start of the match, Hanoi FC created a lot of pressure. They quickly had two chances to score. Seeing that, I was quite disappointed because my players weren't mentally prepared ," commented Pohang Steelers coach Kim Gi-dong.
Hanoi FC faced Pohang Steelers (South Korea) in their opening match of the AFC Champions League 2023/2024. The Vietnamese representatives opted for a slow-paced game, keeping a low defensive line as they were considered the underdogs. They created two opportunities from counter-attacks, however, Hanoi FC's strikers missed those dangerous chances.
Hanoi FC started better but failed to capitalize on their opportunities.
They paid the price when Pohang Steelers scored four consecutive goals at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second. Hanoi FC tried hard in the remaining time but only managed two consolation goals from Tagueu. Coach Kim Gi-dong believes that the pressure from the home team finally woke them up.
According to Kin Gi-dong's analysis, the two dangerous situations at the beginning of the match served as a wake-up call for the Pohang players to regain their composure, calmly implement their playing style, and thus confirm that Pohang Steelers were the stronger team in this match.
Kim In-sung played a crucial role in Pohang Steelers' victory. He scored a brace and constantly harassed Hanoi FC's left flank in attack. The player expressed: " In this match, I had many opportunities to score and I took advantage of them. I hope this will be a positive momentum for me to continue in the next match ."
In the second round of matches, Hanoi FC will play away against Urawa Reds Diamond (Japan). Meanwhile, Pohang Steelers will return home to host Wuhan Three Towns. These matches will take place on October 4th.
