Following a stroke in April 2021, Ms. Hoang Thanh Thuy, 64 years old, from Coc Nam village, Hoang Van Thu commune, received treatment at the Provincial General Hospital and recovered about 50% of her health. However, due to persistent headaches, numbness in her hands, and difficulty gripping objects, which made daily activities difficult, in September 2025, Ms. Thuy continued treatment at the Provincial Traditional Medicine Hospital. There, she was examined and treated with a traditional medicine protocol including acupuncture, steaming, electrotherapy, candle poultices, and foot soaks with traditional herbs. After persistent treatment, her health improved significantly, recovering over 80%. Ms. Thuy shared: "I feel healthier, my hands are more flexible, and I can move around more quickly. Now I can take care of myself and don't have to depend on my family like before."
Not only at the Traditional Medicine Hospital, but the integration of traditional medicine with modern medicine is now being widely implemented at many medical facilities in Lang Son province, including: the Provincial General Hospital, the Rehabilitation Hospital, 10 regional health centers; 41 commune and ward health stations providing traditional medicine examinations and treatments; and 35 non-public traditional medicine clinics and treatment centers. Thanks to this network, the number of patients receiving examinations and treatments using a combination of traditional and modern medicine accounts for approximately 35% of the total number of patients seeking examination and treatment from the beginning of the year to date. This rate demonstrates the effectiveness and increasing trust of the people in the integrated Eastern and Western medicine healthcare model.
At the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital, treatment for patients using a combination of Eastern and Western medicine is implemented right from the initial examination stage, leveraging the strengths of rapid and accurate diagnosis of modern medicine while supporting recovery with traditional medicine methods. Currently, the hospital is implementing a comprehensive range of modern rehabilitation methods such as electrostimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, intravascular laser therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, magnetic field therapy, etc., combined with traditional medicine techniques including electroacupuncture, hydroacupuncture, massage and acupressure, and thread embedding. In 2025, the hospital treated 3,765 inpatients and 591 outpatients, with approximately 90% of patients receiving combined Eastern and Western medicine treatment.
According to Dr. Hoang Quyet Thang, Head of the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Department at the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital: The combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and modern medicine plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall rehabilitation of patients. It not only improves motor function but also supports mental stability, reduces pain, and limits sequelae after strokes and injuries. In particular, combining these two methods helps reduce side effects during long-term medication, thereby enabling the development of appropriate treatment protocols and improving the quality of care for each patient.
It is known that, in order to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment combining Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and modern medicine, in recent years, the staff working in TCM examination and treatment in the province have regularly participated in training courses to update their knowledge and improve their professional skills. In addition, each year more than 1,000 members of the Traditional Medicine Association in the province actively participate in advanced training programs, gradually applying scientific and technological advancements to TCM examination and treatment.
Ms. Hua Thi Phon, from Son Hong Hamlet, Ky Lua Ward, who has over 30 years of experience in traditional medicine, said she regularly participates in training courses organized by the health sector and the Traditional Medicine Association. Through these courses, she has gained a better understanding of scientific treatment principles, distinguishing between cases where traditional medicine can be used, cases where patients should be advised to seek timely medical attention, and diseases requiring a combination of two methods to improve treatment effectiveness. “From this updated knowledge, I have a basis to advise patients on choosing the most suitable and safer treatment method,” Ms. Phon shared.
In practice, it has been shown that when Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is inherited, standardized, and harmoniously combined with modern medicine, the effectiveness of treatment is significantly improved, better meeting the increasingly diverse healthcare needs of the people, thereby further affirming the role and position of TCM in the cause of protecting and improving public health.
