Economic experts affirm that the aviation industry is recovering, but revenue mainly comes from international routes. Data from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam also shows that the number of domestic passengers in the first six months of 2024 reached 17 million, a decrease of more than 19% compared to the same period last year.

Airlines are attracting international passengers.

Vietravel Airlines also successfully operated its first flight connecting Taipei (Taiwan - China) to Phu Quoc (Vietnam), marking its efforts to expand its international flight network to major source markets for Vietnam this year. In addition, in the first six months of 2024, Vietravel Airlines also launched additional charter flights: Hanoi - Sanya (China), Ho Chi Minh City - Takamatsu/Fukushima (Japan), and Da Nang - Fukushima.

In the first six months of 2024, Vietravel Airlines also stepped up its operations of charter flights to overseas destinations.

Even from August 2024, Vietravel Airlines began developing its flight network, increasing flight frequencies during the peak summer season and expanding flights to China such as Hue/ Da Nang - Taichung.

According to Kirin Capital, in the first six months of 2024, the passenger market from China also returned to the second position among the top 10 international markets to Vietnam. Meanwhile, the number of domestic passengers showed a slight decline from 43.2 million in 2022 to only 42 million in 2023, accounting for 56.8% of total passenger transport. Continuing this downward trend, the number of domestic passengers in the first six months of 2024 reached 17 million, a decrease of more than 19% compared to the same period last year.

Riding the wave of aviation and tourism.

According to data from the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, in the first seven months of 2024, the country welcomed nearly 10 million international visitors and over 79.5 million domestic visitors. It is expected that both international and domestic visitor numbers this year will exceed the targets.

Regarding the aviation industry, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam cites forecasts from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) indicating that the global aviation market will fully recover by the end of this year. In particular, the Asia-Pacific market (including Vietnam) could break its losing streak and achieve profits of approximately US$1.1 billion.

"As of the summer 2024 flight schedule, 63 foreign airlines and 4 Vietnamese airlines have fully restored their international flight networks to pre-Covid-19 levels and are continuing to expand to new markets in Central Asia, India, and Australia. Vietnamese airlines account for 44% of the international passenger market share with an average seat occupancy rate of over 77%," a leader of the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority informed.

According to Kirin Capital data, the proportion of international passengers in the first six months of 2024 increased, accounting for 55.1% of the total passenger volume.

The report "Air Cargo Transport - A New Driving Force," published by Kirin Capital, also shows a growing number of international visitors returning to the Vietnamese market. In 2021, when international air travel to Vietnam hit rock bottom due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the aviation industry only served approximately 540,000 visitors. However, by the end of 2023, the number of international visitors had recovered and reached 32 million, accounting for 43.2% of the total number of visitors.

According to the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority, 63 foreign airlines and 4 Vietnamese airlines have now recovered to levels comparable to those before the Covid-19 pandemic. These airlines operate nearly 160 international routes connecting Vietnam with destinations around the world.
