Airlines "race" to open international routes

Economists say the aviation industry is recovering, but revenue mainly comes from international flights. Data from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam also shows that the number of domestic passengers in the first 6 months of 2024 reached 17 million, down more than 19% compared to the same period last year.

Airlines "pull" international passengers

Vietravel Airlines also successfully operated the first flight connecting Taipei (Taiwan - China) to Phu Quoc (Vietnam), marking the journey of efforts to expand the international flight network to major tourist markets of Vietnam this year. In addition, in the first 6 months of 2024, Vietravel Airlines also operated additional charter flights: Hanoi - Sanya (China), Ho Chi Minh City - Takamatsu/Fukushima (Japan), Da Nang - Fukushima.

In the first 6 months of 2024, Vietravel Airlines will also promote charter flights abroad.

Even from August 2024, Vietravel Airlines also began to develop its flight network, increase the frequency of operations during the summer peak season and expand flights to China such as Hue/ Da Nang - Taichung.

According to Kirin Capital, in the first 6 months of 2024, the passenger market from China also returned to the 2nd position among the 10 largest international markets to Vietnam. Meanwhile, the number of domestic passengers showed signs of a slight decline from 43.2 million passengers in 2022 to only 42 million in 2023, accounting for 56.8% of total passenger transport. Continuing the decline, the number of domestic passengers in the first 6 months of 2024 reached 17 million passengers, down more than 19% compared to the same period last year.

Catch the wave of aviation - tourism

According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, in the first 7 months of 2024, the country welcomed nearly 10 million international visitors and more than 79.5 million domestic visitors. It is expected that the number of international and domestic visitors this year will exceed the target.

Regarding the aviation industry, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam cited the forecast of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) showing that the global aviation market will fully recover by the end of this year. In particular, the Asia-Pacific market (including Vietnam) can break the loss streak and achieve a profit of about 1.1 billion USD.

“As of the 2024 summer flight schedule, 63 foreign airlines and 4 Vietnamese airlines have fully restored their international flight networks to the pre-Covid-19 period and continue to expand to new markets in Central Asia, India, and Australia. Vietnamese airlines account for 44% of the international passenger market share with an average seat utilization rate of over 77%,” said the leader of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.

Kirin Capital data shows that the proportion of international passengers in the first 6 months of 2024 increased, accounting for 55.1% of total passengers.

The report “Air cargo transport - a new driving force” published by Kirin Capital also shows that the number of international visitors returning to the Vietnamese market is increasing. In 2021, when international visitors to Vietnam by air “hit rock bottom” due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the aviation industry only served about 540,000. However, by the end of 2023, the number of international visitors had recovered and reached 32 million, accounting for 43.2% of the total number of visitors.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, 63 foreign airlines and 4 Vietnamese airlines have recovered to pre-Covid-19 levels. The airlines operate nearly 160 international routes connecting Vietnam with destinations around the world.
