Vietnam Airlines Group (including Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines, and VASCO) has just announced that it will add more than 66,200 seats, equivalent to over 310 domestic flights, during the peak Tet holiday period from January 25th to February 24th (i.e., from the 15th day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Rabbit to the 15th day of the 1st lunar month of the Year of the Dragon).
This increase in flights brings the total number of domestic and international flights operated by Vietnam Airlines Group during the peak Tet holiday period to approximately 2.64 million seats, equivalent to 12,374 flights.
The increased flights are primarily focused on domestic routes between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Vinh, Thanh Hoa, Quy Nhon, Hue, Quang Nam , Tuy Hoa, Da Lat, Cam Ranh, Buon Ma Thuot, Pleiku, and Phu Quoc. These flights serve both the need for passengers to return home for family reunions and the demand for spring travel during Tet (Lunar New Year).
During the peak Tet holiday season, due to increased travel demand, Vietnam Airlines recommends that passengers proactively plan and purchase airline tickets in advance.
Additionally, passengers should check in in advance via the website, mobile app, hotline 1900 6265 (telephone check-in), or at self-check-in kiosks. Passengers should arrive at the airport 2 hours before departure for domestic flights and 3 hours before departure for international flights.
Recently, Bamboo Airways also welcomed its second Airbus A320 aircraft to its fleet to serve the peak Tet holiday season of 2024. With this fleet expansion, Bamboo Airways plans to increase its capacity by 20%, increase flight frequencies on key routes such as Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City, between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, and high-demand local routes between Ho Chi Minh City and Vinh, Thanh Hoa, Hai Phong, etc., as well as increase night flights on routes between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Da Nang, Vinh, etc.
According to the latest figures from the Civil Aviation Authority, the total number of flights during this year's Lunar New Year holiday is expected to reach approximately 33,800, a 14% increase compared to the same period in 2023 and a 21% increase compared to the current regular flight schedule. Of these, domestic flights are expected to reach 24,200, a 2% increase compared to the same period and a 27% increase compared to the current normal domestic flight schedule.
As of January 4th, flight bookings for routes from Ho Chi Minh City to 9 local airports (Hue, Pleiku, Tuy Hoa, Thanh Hoa, Quy Nhon, Chu Lai, Quang Binh, Vinh, and Quang Ninh) have reached 85-95% (with the route to Van Don reaching 100%). For routes from 13 local airports back to Ho Chi Minh City, the highest booking rates are for the post-Tet period from January 4th to 10th (February 13th-19th), ranging from 79-93%. Additionally, the Hanoi-Vinh route was 99% booked before Tet.
Meanwhile, on major routes such as Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi, Hanoi - Da Nang, and Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City, the occupancy rate during the period from the 24th of the 12th lunar month to the 6th of the 1st lunar month (February 3-15, 2024) only averaged 30-40%. This is because these routes have one of the highest number of seats offered by airlines during the Tet holiday, so there are still many tickets available.
