Apple is imposing two major limitations on the next generation of Apple Intelligence. Some of the most powerful AI features in iOS 27 only run directly on a select few newer devices. Meanwhile, Siri AI has yet to be released on iPhones and iPads in the European Union and China.
According to 9to5Mac , Apple just announced the new generation of Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2026. The company also introduced Siri AI, an upgraded version of the Siri virtual assistant. However, the most powerful AI model runs directly on devices with significantly higher hardware requirements.
Specifically, users need an iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, or iPhone Air to run the AI model directly on the device. For iPads, the device needs to be equipped with an M4 chip or higher and have at least 12 GB of storage. For Macs, the requirement is an M3 chip or higher and a minimum of 12 GB of storage.
This means many devices supporting Apple Intelligence will not be able to run the most powerful model. 9to5Mac reports that some of the new AI features in iOS 27 still work on current hardware, such as the iPhone 15 Pro. However, with the enhanced model, Apple requires 12 GB of storage instead of the previous minimum of 8 GB.
It's worth noting that the standard iPhone 17 is not on the list. This is because that model only has 8 GB of internal storage. Devices that don't meet the requirements can still use similar features. However, they will rely on Apple's cloud computing system. Therefore, performance may be slower compared to processing directly on the device.
From a regional perspective, MacRumors reports that Siri AI will not be available on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 in the EU when the new software versions are released later this year. Apple says the feature is free, but cannot be rolled out in the EU until a suitable approach is found that meets regulatory requirements.
Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, said the company was "very disappointed" that EU users wouldn't have Siri AI on iPhones and iPads by the end of this year.
The restrictions in the EU apply to both users and developers. Developers in Europe will not be able to test or integrate new Siri AI features into iPhone and iPad apps. However, Apple will still offer Siri AI in the EU on macOS 27, visionOS 27, and watchOS 27.
In China, Siri AI has not yet been released. Apple says the company is still processing legal requirements in that market.
These changes indicate that the next generation of Apple Intelligence is not being rolled out uniformly. The AI experience on iOS 27 will depend on the device, storage, and location of the user.
