A recent study found that regularly snacking on sugary foods like cakes, pastries, and cookies increases the risk of developing kidney stones.

To reach this conclusion, researchers at the Hospital affiliated with North Sichuan Medical University in Nanchong City, Sichuan Province (China) analyzed data from nearly 30,000 people, according to the Daily Mail .

Snacking on sugary foods increases the risk of developing kidney stones.

These data were collected over more than 11 years. Those whose data was collected reported on their history of kidney stones as well as their diets. Based on their diets, researchers estimated the amount of sugar they consumed each day.

After analyzing the data, the authors found that those who consumed the most sugar, especially in snacks, had a 39% higher risk of developing kidney stones compared to the average person. Furthermore, those whose sugar intake accounted for 25% of their total daily energy intake had an 88% higher risk of developing kidney stones.

Previously, scientists identified factors that increase the risk of kidney stones as obesity, being male, chronic diarrhea, low water intake, and diabetes. In this study, a high-sugar diet will be added to this list. The research results were published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.

"Our study is the first published study focusing on the link between high sugar intake and kidney stones," said Dr. Son Am, the study's lead author.

His and his colleagues' evidence suggests that reducing sugar intake can help prevent kidney stones. In other words, people need to limit snacking on sugary foods like cakes, candies, sodas, and many other sugary treats.

In fact, kidney stones are a fairly common disease. Statistics show that about 10% of the population may have kidney stones. Most are between the ages of 30 and 60.

Kidney stones form due to the accumulation of waste products into crystals in the kidneys. Over time, these crystals grow larger and form stones. The condition can cause severe pain. If left untreated, sufferers may develop kidney infections, kidney failure, and other dangerous complications, according to the Daily Mail.
