Some sources indicate that Apple is planning to upgrade the camera on the iPhone 17 Pro Max with a 48MP Tetraprism lens to improve image quality.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max product line is expected to be launched by Apple in 2025. The most notable feature is the Tetraprism zoom lens with a 48MP sensor, 19% larger than the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will mark a major leap forward in Apple's mobile camera technology with an upgraded 48MP Tetraprism camera featuring improved zoom capabilities. Specifically, in his latest notes, Kuo wrote that the key specification change will be the 1/2.6-inch 48MP CIS sensor, promising superior photo and video capabilities.
It's currently unclear whether the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be the only iPhone model equipped with Apple's 48MP Tetraprism zoom lens. However, if this prediction is accurate, it would be a bold move by Apple, significantly differentiating it from its competitors in the market.
To put it simply, the iPhone 15 Pro models currently only come equipped with a 48MP main lens, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and a 12MP telephoto lens.
Kuo added that if this plan doesn't materialize on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, then it's highly likely that the iPhone 18 Pro, launching in late 2026, will be equipped with an upgraded Tetraprism lens. The design of this sensor is also said to be changing, reducing its size and saving internal space.
