As summer approaches, many parents in Ho Chi Minh City choose to enroll their children in martial arts classes to help them improve their health and physical fitness during the summer break.

Summer is always an ideal time for parents to look for extracurricular classes and sports activities to help their children relieve stress after a demanding school year, while also limiting their screen time. Among these options, martial arts is always a top choice for parents.

According to my observations, at the Ho Xuan Huong Gymnasium (Xuan Hoa Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) in the early days of summer, the atmosphere in the training area becomes lively with the participation of many young martial arts students in both Taekwondo and Karate. Therefore, parents choose to enroll their children in martial arts classes during the summer to help them improve their health, increase their physical activity, and reduce their screen time.

According to Taekwondo coach Nguyen Manh Kha (28 years old), the current tuition fee for the class ranges from about 400,000 VND/month, with classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays; or Saturdays and Sundays, making it easier for parents to arrange their children's schedules. Mr. Kha said that new students will be introduced to the martial arts uniform, etiquette, greetings, and basic skills before moving on to specialized Taekwondo exercises.

Learning martial arts is also a way for children to improve their health and physical fitness.

According to Mr. Kha, learning martial arts helps children defend themselves in all situations, contributing to their increased confidence in daily life and teaching them how to protect themselves from potential risks to their health and personal safety. "Learning martial arts not only helps children improve their health and motor skills but also makes them more confident in their daily lives. During training, children learn to control their emotions, react to unexpected situations, and protect themselves from potential risks to their health and safety," Mr. Kha shared.

Meanwhile, Karate classes also attract many young students during the summer. According to Karate instructor Huynh Cong Anh Dung, who has 10 years of teaching experience here, the classes accept children from a very young age, from 5 years old and up. Currently, the tuition fee for the Karate class is 400,000 VND/month with flexible class schedules on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays or Saturdays and Sundays for parents' convenience.

Mr. Dung said that for children who are new to the class and haven't had time to adapt, the coaches will provide thorough guidance, from how to greet, to getting acquainted with the class, introducing the origins of the martial art, and practicing basic stances. "For children who are just starting out and are not yet familiar with the martial arts environment, we won't immediately introduce sparring or heavy punching and kicking exercises. First, they will be guided through the basics such as how to greet, how to behave in class, and getting to know their classmates. During class, the teachers will also tell stories about the origins of the martial art to make the children more interested. Only when the children are more confident and outgoing will they begin practicing the basic Karate exercises," Mr. Dung shared.

At 31 Su Van Hanh Street (Vuon Lai Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), many parents are also registering their children to participate during the summer. Characterized by its traditional Vietnamese martial arts, Vovinam not only helps children improve their physical fitness but also emphasizes discipline, etiquette, and basic self-defense skills.

Mr. Le Huu Vang, a Vovinam instructor at the Su Van Hanh club, said that classes are held throughout the week from Monday to Sunday with various time slots. Mr. Vang's class, in particular, is held on Saturdays and Sundays, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM. The average tuition fee is 400,000 VND per month per student.
